No Cleo for Jackman

01.02.2009

Hugh Jackman's new career choice as an awards ceremony host may be preventing him from continuing a once promising acting career. Due to scheduling conflicts (hosting award shows), Jackman has dropped out of his reported starring role in Steven Soderbergh's CLEO--a 3-D live action musical--gulp. Jackman was set to play Marc Antony opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones as Cleopatra. Mr. 3-D himself Ray Winstone is being tapped to play Julius Cesar.

One can't help but meet Soderbergh's latest project with some skepticism. He has said he wants to inject the famous love story with rock n' roll songs and a style akin to an Elvis musical. The music was written by the indie rock band Guided by Voices, and the script is by the group's former bass player, James Greer. If anyone can pull this ambitious project off however, it's Steven Soderbergh. Unfortunately for Jackman, he'll have to wait for the movie's release like the rest of us, to find out.

If I

As a female film viewer, this movie looks like a piece of s***! I rather see "Repo! The Generic Opera" (never seen it by the way) than "Cleo".

Before Jackman hit it big in the X-Men films, he was a musical theater actor. He won the Tony while appearing in The Boy From OZ, did a great job playing Curly in Oklahoma on the West End, and if I'm not mistaken has a musical picture deal with a studio where I heard he is attached to play Billy Bigelow in a new adaptation of Carousel. Sorry aside from a film nerd I'm also a Theater geek.

Well...

That doesn't seem like a very good analogy considering dead babies covered in glass is absolutely delicious.

I'd rather eat broken glass covered in dead babies than watch this movie... no matter who is in it.

Damn this movie sounds like an epic stinker in the making. Good job Hugh on knowing when to drop out of something that epicly bad while still saving face. Im sure this movie will probably be a razzie contender in the future. But as far as this news goes its good that hugh had the cajones to drop out wisely when he did.

Soderbergh has only given us a couple bad movies in his career, but he knows how to entertain. Add that to the fact that Guided By Voices is one of the most prolific indie bands of all time (and great songwriters) and this could be a winner. Bummer that Jackman is out, but it will be interesting to see him host the Oscars.

Aww, that's too bad!! This could have been seriously great with him.

Well, as long as they don't get a total drip to play him, it still might work out.

As for the movie itself: I'm pumped at the idea, I love Catherine Zeta-Jones, and it's true: if anyone can pull this off, it'd be Steven Soderbergh.
