Robert De Niro developing and possibly starring in a film on Bernie Madoff

05.13.2011

I'm sure you've heard more than your fair share about Bernie Madoff. But who has decided to develop a film about the guy? None other than Robert De Niro.

HBO picked up the rights on Diane Henrique’s non-fiction book, "The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust" which hit bookshelves last month. The book details, "the financial wunderkind who bilked millions from unsuspecting investors." De Niro his Tribeca Productions partner Jane Rosethal will produce the film with the actor possibly starring as well.

Madoff is currently serving time, a 150 year sentence to be exact, due to his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. The man basically stole money out of people's accounts and lived it up in the lap of luxury.

This seems like a great role for De Niro and another home run for HBO.

Extra Tidbit: in 2009, Lawrence Salander, a prominent art gallery owner, was charged with bilking a slew of high-profile clients, including De Niro, out of $88 million on high-priced art deals over more than 15 years.

Someone really needs to make it clear that not EVERYONE who makes the news deserves a movie.

De Niro

Will be a great Bernie madoff, not to mention he has ripped us off on a few films lately so you could say he has been in character for a few years now!

stupid

this whole Ponzi scheme was ridiculous. If the whole market was going to SHIT, and you're still making MILLIONS, you should start asking questions. Buncha morons.

I'd rather see Robin Williams or Gene Hackman playing Madoff, but De Niro could also do a great job!

I like this. It sort of sounds like the same route HBO did with Pacino and You Don't Know Jack. It may very well be an acting gem by the great De Niro!

A home run for HBO??? What exactly would be depicted on-screen in a movie about a Ponzi scheme? I'm sure the book is interesting, but this sounds like a terrible idea.
