UPDATE: Variety‘s Justin Kroll has tweeted a fourth actress tested, Rooney Mara’s sister, Kate Mara. Kate has four movies coming to theaters in 2015, including CAPTIVE, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, MAN DOWN, and THE MARTIAN. The original story follows:

Pre-production is underway on the standalone STAR WARS film, an untitled STAR WARS SPIN-OFF to be directed by Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA), and things are definitely getting exciting. Two weeks ago Gary Whitta, who was the first writer on the project and had been working with Edwards on the script for a year, left the film. A movie still has to be made and it seems to be moving forward as production is set to get underway this year. It’s been revealed that Rooney Mara, Tatiana Maslany, and Felicity Jones are in the testing stages for the film’s lead role. There is so much talent and beauty there, this is just awesome!

THR reports that Maslany, who stars in the BBC America series Orphan Black, is testing for the female lead in the film, and Mara is up this week for the task. My favorite of the selection though has to be Felicity Jones; she recently starred in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING and received an Oscar nomination for the performance. Sadly she's said to be on the "wantlist" as there may be scheduling issues wither her upcoming work on Ron Howard’s Da Vinci Code sequel INFERNO this year.

This news makes me happy for two reasons: they are putting a strong talented female in the lead role of a STAR WARS film and they are not making a big sexist deal about it - I’m looking at you GHOSTBUSTERS reboot. I'll be glad to see any of these actresses land the part; they all deserve a blockbuster like this to make that deserving spotlight a little bigger.

The STAR WARS SPIN-OFF will be released on December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII written and directed by Rian Johnson in December 2017. Josh Trank is also currently attached to helm a Star Wars spinoff for a release in 2018.

So we are asking ourselves "who will play the role" and I ask myself "the role of who?"... The conclusion is the spinoff will be about a female character.... will it be a new character or someone already established? Mind you... not a lot of strong female characters there as of yet, besides Amidala and Leia....

I'm holding off on who I'd prefer for the role

until I know what kind of the character the lucky actress will be playing. But more STAR WARS - minus George Lucas - makes me happy.

My only complaint is that they can't use all three of them. They're three of my favorite actresses. Can't wait!

If I find myself frowning and re-reading sentences then I know it's an article written by Graham. Just report the story, we don't always need your two cents distracting us.

It might say something about the three actresses being considered, but I think Tatiana Maslany would be my personal pick. She's already established some sci-fi cred with Orphan Black, not to mention showed tremendous range as an actress in that same show. She also has a sort of otherworldly look, which I know is not so important in Star Wars specifically, but I can't think would hurt either.

This is exciting news, but...
Tatiana Maslany starred in the BBC America series ORPHAN BLACK, not Orphan.

I still get mad thinking about how The Amazing Spider-Man 2 managed to waste a gorgeous, talented, Oscar-nominee actress like Felicity Jones. What a thankless role. Hopefully Star Wars does a better job.

Also, "they are putting a strong talented female in the lead role of a STAR WARS film and they are not making a big sexist deal about it - Iím looking at you GHOSTBUSTER reboot." WHAT? How is an all-female team "sexist"? Gimmicky? Sure. Heavy-handed? Probably. But sexist? Uh..

They announced that a new GHOSTBUSTER film would be made, and that it would have an all-female cast. The fact that the distributors and filmmakers announced it as such (great, an all women lead cast!) highlights the idea that they think women want to be given unoriginal roles based on an all-male movie and they should be happy with that. So now it's a gimmick and hurts any gender equality a different approach may have brought. The PR people can jump around touting a win for women, but it comes

I don't think the announcement in and of itself is evidence of pandering. I mean, you would think that such a crucial detail would be touted and made known beforehand. If the actual script and themes of the movie prove to be pandering, then I'll accept that it's sexist and actually doing more harm than good to gender equality. But right now? It's a little tough to come right out and label it as sexist and pandering, based on nothing more than the fact that they announced an all-female cast. As

As far as I'm concerned, there are TONS of movies with an all-male cast. It probably isn't such a bad idea to have an all-female cast this one time.

Would love to see Rooney Mara get the part because in my opinion she's the strongest actress out of the three.

They are all strong actors, just very different. The deciding factor in casting won't be name recognition or acting strength; it will hinge on what slant the producers want to give the character.
