Rumor: Kathryn Bigelow on directors shortlist for Tomb Raider reboot

09.17.2015

UPDATE: Peter Sciretta over at /Film heard from Kathryn Bigelow's reps who told him that "Kathryn has not met with anyone about this project, and does not have any interest in directing this film.

Lara Croft's return was fast-tracked earlier this year and word was that the studio was looking for "a Michelle MacLaren type" to helm the reboot. Now The Tracking Board is reporting on a rumour that Warner Bros. have narrowed down their list of potential directors to Kathryn Bigelow (ZERO DARK THIRTY), Catherine Hardwicke (TWILIGHT), and Mimi Leder (DEEP IMPACT).

The Walking Dead's Tricia Brock was previously attached to the film but TB's sources tell them that she has officially passed on the project which has left the door open for someone else to steer the TOMB RAIDER reboot. Evan Daugherty (TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES) has already penned the screenplay for the film which will follow a young Lara Croft on her first archaeological expedition. Kathryn Bigelow Catherine Hardwicke, and Mimi Leder were also included on Warner Bros. shortlist for WONDER WOMAN which ended up in the the hands of Patty Jenkins after Michelle MacLaren exited due to "creative differences".

Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics' sequel to their 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider, will be released on November 10, 2015 for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Should this rumour pan out, who would be the best fit for the TOMB RAIDER reboot?

So they take a Bigelow classic and turn it into crap and then they hire Bigelow to take a franchise with two crappy movies and make them good. We live in a very strange world.

You know, there's so few action movies about women that is directed by women in Hollywood even though Kathryn Bigelow and other female directors have proven that women directors can direct action movies starring men. So what's the big deal if they want a female in the director's chair?

Why is the studio pretending this film will need a female director just because the protagonist is female. Directing doesn't have any gender based factors in it. Just get the best you can for the cheapest you can, what else matters?

Same issue as Wonder Woman...

I enjoyed the last TR game on next gen but for my movie dollar I am tired of seeing models built out of twigs kick the asses of men three times their size. It just isn't going to happen people. I'm not saying cast Rhonda Rousey but the actress needs to look the part. Don't be so adherant to the video game that you can't give her a more physical appearance.

Are you kidding me?

I don't care about the director, she has done some great(ly overrated) crap. But the movie has no chance because the person who wrote the script is horrible. Go watch TMNT and tell me that guy deserves to write a movie based on a video game. I can see all the LOST jokes being made by Lara now...

Lauren Cohan would be a decent choice. Someone above said Alexandria Daddario, which would be another great choice.

Bigelow is more than enough to handle this project but I'm afraid she might think this sort of project isn't her usual stuff.

Don't worry, she will throw in military shit and boring plots, just like she usually does.

And I dislike how the studio's shortlist is only composed of female directors. It should be best person for the job overall.

Would love to see her helm this, but I have a feeling that she would think this wouldn't really be worth her time.

I would love to see the shortlist of actress' who the studio wants for Lara Croft. I've always envisioned Emily Blunt for the part, but I feel like her name is getting thrown around too much now.
