Soderbergh’s Cleopatra

And in today’s “Never Saw That One Coming” news, director Steven Soderbergh (OUT OF SIGHT, OCEAN’S 11, 12, 13) is making a “3-D live-action rock ’n’ roll musical about Cleopatra.”

What’s more, he wants Catherine Zeta-Jones for his legendary Egyptian queen, and Hugh Jackman as her lover Marc Antony. Because why not? If you’re gonna do something this kooky and experimental, might as well get high-profile actors with strong skills in singing, dancing and being three-dimensional. The $30 million project will also feature music from Guided by Voices.

While Soderbergh’s two-part Che Guevara biopic awaits release(s), he’s putting the finishing touches on his Matt Damon espionage movie THE INFORMANT and is also cooking up a Liberace movie (with Zeta’s elder half, Michael Douglas) and a low-budget film called THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, featuring porn star Sasha Grey. Because why not?
