The 2011 Paramount Pictures preview!

01.21.2011

Paramount Pictures seems to have a monopoly on the top comic book movies this year as they are prepping to launch both THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA into our open arms this summer, along with sequels to such franchises as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, TRANSFORMERS, KUNG FU PANDA and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (which apparently wants to take over the annual SAW release date every October).

They've also got one remake under their wings (FOOTLOOSE as directed by the dude who wrote/directed HUSTLE & FLOW and BLACK SNAKE MOAN?!?), as well as a few original possibilities (yay for originality!) including Johnny Depp's voice in RANGO, Steven Spielberg returning to his directing chair in the first installment of the TINTIN series, as well as JJ Abrams' latest "secret" movie entitled SUPER 8 (no picture or poster or plot outline given yet -- although we did finally get the cast list, woo-hoo!).

You can check out the whole Paramount roster below and, as per usual, click on any of the pics for more info on the film, or check out the entire list of 2011 UPCOMING MOVIES, and let us know your thoughts below...

NO STRINGS ATTACHED
(January 21)

In this comedy, Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly "no strings attached." "No strings" means no jealousy, no expectations, no fighting, no flowers, no baby voices. It means they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, in whatever public place they want, as long as they don't fall in love. The questions become - Can you have sex without love getting in the way? And can their friendship survive?

JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER
(February 11)

"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" is the inspiring true story and rare inside look at the rise of Justin from street performer in the small town of Stratford, Ontario to internet phenomenon to global super star culminating with a dream sold out show at the famed Madison Square Garden in 3-D.

RANGO
(March 4)

The story follows the comical, transformative journey of Rango (Depp), a sheltered chameleon living as an ordinary family pet, while facing a major identity crisis. After all, how high can you aim when your whole purpose in life is to blend in? When Rango accidentally winds up in the gritty, gun-slinging town of Dirt - a lawless outpost populated by the desert's most wily and whimsical creatures - the less-than-courageous lizard suddenly finds he stands out. Welcomed as the last hope the town has been waiting for, new Sheriff Rango is forced to play his new role to the hilt . . . until, in a blaze of action-packed situations and encounters with outrageous characters, Rango starts to become the hero he once only pretended to be.

THOR
(May 6)

The epic adventure THOR spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the mystical realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. As a result, Thor is banished to Earth where he is forced to live among humans. When the most dangerous villain of his world sends its darkest forces to invade Earth, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero.

KUNG FU PANDA 2
(May 26)

In "Kung Fu Panda 2", Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five. But Po's new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. Po must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.

SUPER 8
(June 10)

A mysterious, supernatural event from director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg.

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON
(July 1)

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON features Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) taking his first tenuous steps into adulthood while remaining a reluctant human ally of Optimus Prime. The film centers around the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, suggesting there was a hidden Transformers role in it all that remains one of the planet's most dangerous secrets. The villain of the third film will be Shockwave.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
(July 22)

Based on the Marvel Comics character from World War II. A brave, yet mild-mannered young soldier named Steve Rogers, volunteers to undergo a series of experiments for a US army Super Soldier program. The military succeeds in transforming him into a human weapon, but quickly decide that their Super Soldier is far too expensive a creation to risk in combat. So, they decide to put him to use as an army celebrity and parade him across Europe to boost morale by performing in USO shows for American troops. He is even given a costume that bear the colors of Old Glory for the stage.

Then, when a Nazi plot reveals itself Rogers must rise up and and become the First Avenger, in order to save his country. Steve Rogers becomes Captain America and he earns his way into the hearts and souls of every American, bringing hope and justice to a war-weary nation. Later, during a mission to Germany to stop his archenemy - The Red Skull, from launching rockets at the allies, Captain America sacrifices himself and winds up frozen in ice for almost six decades! Revived, Steve Rogers now must join forces with new heroes and become an Avenger of the modern age.

FOOTLOOSE
(October 14)

Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont's local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister's troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3
(October 21)

The third installment of the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY horror franchise.

PUSS IN BOOTS
(November 4)

RANGO= FIEVEL GOES WEST!!!

I think visually Rango looks great, but to say that the fish out of water story involving talking animals becoming sheriffs and taking it to the villain of the town. It is just Fievel Goes West, which I am sure was based off another movie of the same ilk. I just haven't heard anyone mentioning this and it kinda pisses me off.

Footloose

Can't wait for this movie! Loved the originalbut always thought it could have been better with better looking stars, and now it is going to be great! And a little more edgy and gritty. October is too far off though.

Paramount...

May have the upper hand this year with the Marvel properties and all. Too bad they won't be having that luxury anymore.

Barely Excited

Barring a few exceptions (Super 8, Rango) there is nothing special. All I can see here is: remake, remake, sequel, remake, sequel, sequel

Transformers 3 and Sucker Punch aside (as the two biggest blockbusters), M:I 4 is the most anticipated movie 2011 (still blockbuster wise, art movies like Tree of Life obviously not included). So can't wait. And I don't really know why.
M:I was great (the last 7 minutes aside), 2 wasn't M:I, as was M:I3 (which obviously was better than 2, but more like "Alias - The movie).
But I just love me some spy thriller stuff, Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner.. I just hope it won't be just action, and more spy

I wonder if Paramount is going to dog any of the advertising for the Marvel films since this is the last year they are distributing for them? I know they want their cut and percentage to be high because money is money but they have to be feeling a bit rejected and know they are helping set up franchises that will blow their own films out of the water in future years.

Despite a few dubious entries (fuckin' Bieber, man!), a very solid lineup for the most part. Looks like Paramount is going to be box office king of this year!
