The 83rd Academy Award nominations!

This morning at 8:30am EST/5:30am PST, the nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be announced in Hollywood. Last year’s Best Supporting Actress, Mo’Nique will join Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to announce the winners and we’ve got a live feed from the event that you can watch below. Once the nominees are announced in full, we’ll update with a complete list plus reactions. It looks like THE SOCIAL NETWORK and THE KING’S SPEECH will be among the big winners but who and what do you think will be the big surprises?

As expected, and mentioned above, THE KING’S SPEECH and THE SOCIAL NETWORK were big winners this morning with the former bringing in a top 12 nominations and the latter a total of 8 nominations (TRUE GRIT had the second most nominations with 10). There weren’t many surprises as far as the Best Picture nominees (I put together a mock-up last night and my preliminary list is exactly what they announced this morning) but that’s not to say there weren’t a few surprises.

Almost every year, there’s a shake-up in the Best Director category and this year was no different. Joel and Ethan Coen, who had been shut out of many of the early awards, snuck in while Christopher Nolan was snubbed for his work on INCEPTION (to Nolan’s credit, he did score a Best Original Screenplay nod for that film).

Javier Bardem made it into the Best Actor race (likely at the expense of Robert Duvall’s GET LOW performance) and John Hawkes bumped Andrew Garfield (THE SOCIAL NETWORK) out of the Best Supporting Actor category. Two FIGHTER actresses were nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo, Amy Adams) and Jacki Weaver was a pleasant surprise for JoBlo.com fave ANIMAL KINGDOM.

TOY STORY 3 got a surprise Adapted Screenplay nomination, edging out other hopefuls like THE RABBIT HOLE. TOY STORY also made the Best Animated Feature category, which was trimmed to three nominees this year. While HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and THE ILLUSIONIST were nominated, DESPICABLE ME and TANGLED were left high and dry. (Other good news for Pixar, their short film “Day & Night” was nominated for Best Animated Short.)

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD was shut out of the Visual Effects category (in favor of HEREAFTER??) and the Sound Mixing/Editing categories where it was expected to get nominated.

The nominees are listed in full below and once you take a look, let us know what makes you the happiest and most disappointed when you peruse the potential winners (I have a feeling the lack of a Chris Nolan nomination for Best Director will get folks talking….)
