The full first trailer for Iron Man 3 is epic, dark, thrilling, and will leave you begging for more

Oct. 23, 2012by: Paul Shirey

After enduring an onslaught of set pics, official images, teasers, and a poster, we now have the first full trailer for IRON MAN 3. So, does it live up the hype? Will it redeem itself after the somewhat lackluster IRON MAN 2? The short answer: It sure as hell looks that way. What we have here is a trailer that truly sets up the stakes of the game. Instead of showing us the entire movie in two minutes, this trailer teases the way a trailer should. This is the lap dance that leaves you reaching for another $20. So, with that in mind, bust open your wallet, take a seat, and let this trailer work you over.

Lesson Number One:

So, let's review, shall we? Mandarin has the rings, so us fanboys can breathe a sigh of relief for the sake of integrity there. There's obviously a lot going on there, but all of it hinges on the absolute destruction of Tony Stark in order for him to rebuild himself. I feel affirmed in the selection of Shane Black as director after seeing this, even if it's just a two-minute peek at the film. The darkness, the scope, the absolute pummeling that Stark is looking to take; it all measures up to what looks to be a film that embraces the dilemma of Stark, which is a man constantly reinventing himself. I love that this film is beating the shit out of him and I can't wait to see the inevitable showdown between Iron Man and Mandarin.

If I had one complaint for IRON MAN 2, amongst a few quibbles, it was the super short showdown between Iron Man and Whiplash. I'm hoping Black will make up for that as he seems to have a slew of awesomeness in store and I'm beyond stoked to see it unfold. This looks like it has the potential to be the best of the series thus far.

IRON MAN 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, James Badge Dale, Guy Pearce, and Rebecca Hall is set to rock Tony Stark's world on May 3, 2013.

This is the comic book movie that we all wish was made. The gritty dark but still followin the original style. Hero gets beaten and beaten and we all get to get that squirm in your seat "FUCK YEAH" feeling when he gets his shit together. I feel the build up at the end of this one wll be epic.

I don't understand how...

I don't understand how people can compare Iron Man 3 to The Dark Knight Returns. TDKR is about a rich guy that uses fancy technology to fight crime. IM3 is about... ... ... Never mind. WHO CARES?!? IM3 is going to be great from the looks of it. Nolanites are going to complain about the movie regardless. I'm going to enjoy it regardless.

Honestly and Completely Serious, Blown Away!

Shane Black, you have my full attention with Iron Man 3. After the okay Iron Man 2, and the "just good" The Avengers. I wasn't to eager for an Iron Man 3 film. However, I did not expect a darker, richer, and more compelling entry into the Iron Man franchise. I was blown away! Special shout out to Ben Kingsley who looks to be a good villain. Looks highly promising Shane Black! Side note: I hope Shane Black's Iron Man 3 puts Joss Whedon's The Avengers to shame.
Can totally see and sense the

Looks incredible. This is the first Marvel movie in my opinion that I feel might level up to the the quality of The Dark Knight. Looks better than the Avengers to be honest.

Absolutely loved the trailer and extremely excited to see this movie. I did want to ask though, did anyone else notice that unknown stuffed weird animal-like creature with large titties in the scene where Stark and Potts get blown away in slow motion from the explosion? That thing is kinda creepy.

Looks Amazing.

It looks promising that Shane Black has delivered. This is a minor point, but Tony Stark's goatee seems less cartoonish in this one. I always thought it looked kind of ridiculous in the prior incarnations.

I welcome the hate, however

this could be good. And I will def watch it, but it has a Dark Knight feel to it. Just my opinion. I really liked the 1st Iron Man - the 2nd I have forgotten all about.

Am I the only one who thinks the final shot of Tony dragging the armour through the snow is one of the most badass images of Iron Man ever?? Can't wait even more now.

Cast + Shane Black + Iron Man = Hells Yeah!!!

I was a little disappointed when I heard Favereau wouldn't be directing this one, but when I heard Downey had a clause that'd let him have final say on the director, that was a little bit of a relief. The fact that we've got Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon) is a very good sign. When you stack the casting of Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall and Ben Kingsley on that, and I can't help but be psyched about this. I do agree that Iron Man 2 was a little bit of a let down, but I think a lot

I do agree that Iron Man 2 was a little bit of a let down, but I think a lot of the problem there was that Marvel wanted to squeeze a lot into it as a precursor to The Avengers. I think it kind of suffered from "Spider-Man 3" syndrome. The studio knows time is running out, and they want to squeeze as much in as possible. In Iron Man 2, they had to introduce Black Widow and give the audience a bit more background about SHIELD and Howard Stark. That worked a lot better than using Sandman (because that's what Raimi wanted), Green Goblin II (because that's what the studio wanted), and Venom (because that's what the fans wanted) all in a film that was originally planned to only have one villain. I think this one will be more on par with the first Iron Man, in terms of Marvel won't be in such a rush to get everything laid out for the Avengers 2.

GREAT

And this is NOT the one shown late august at the Marvel event in Paris...
Tons of new footage, here!!

In the one seen Paris, the whole 'flying parts of the armor' was quite longer and more comical, and you could see Peper trapped under the water after the Malibu house is blown up, for instance...

Looks fantastic. Looks like Marvel took some of the minor complaints had about the earlier Iron Man films, mainly it being to easy for him to defeat villians, and made up for it with this film. I love the Marvel Phase 1 films, but only Iron Man and Avengers are in my top 10 list of comic book films. If this trailer is any indication, Iron Man 3 could be joining them.

It should bee 0 out of 10. Go away all ye thought-provoking and meaningful movies, I say. GO AWAY!. Give us retarded supehero movies about men with SUUUUUUUUPERpowers who save the day against SUUUUUUPER-villans. It's all so.... mature.

Things to Look forward to

We all assumed the new armor at comic con was the extermis armor.
I think this is inncorrect
The armor looks like it will be the armor he starts the movie with. Since the trailer shows the current armor tracks its wayt onto his arm.
extermis armor is already inside of him. there is no need for it to travel to him
i bet we havent seen the awesomness that is the xtermis armor yet

Maybe i've missed it but...

Who the hell is wearing the Iron Patriot suit? Is This supposed to be some sort of reveal in the movie or have they stated who that is supposed to be? The comic books Iron Patriot was Norman Osbourne and i doubt that is the case here, heh.

Also I wonder if his suit coming to him is some tech he's developed or if they are going in the Machine Messiah direction.

Overall, I'm a big fan of what Marvel is doing with the MCU, and I'm sure Shane Black will make a great film (KKBB is a masterpiece). But I'd be lying if I said I'm not still severely disappointed by the new gold scheme suit, Rhodey as Iron Patriot, the look of Mandarin (still needs to be closer to the comics, though I admit it could've been much worse), and a couple other things. Oh well.

Kingsley's voice as Mandarin gives me chills...

I'm with mdb47, I think the look and voice of Kingsley is incredibly executed. He sounds calm, cool and calculating which is very threatening. That's who the Mandarin is.

Man do I love a well made trailer... we all know Tony was going to rock... but Mandarin stole the show with the trailer.

Something about very calm and proper - but incredibly intimidating - villains that I can't get enough of.

I'm excited to see the airplane rescue action sequence, because I'm a sucker for any scene involving people falling out of planes and struggling to land safely (or to save others, or even the plane itself) - and because it looks like that plane is Air Force One. Truly a trailer to whet the appetite, couldn't think of a better analogy than the "lap dance that will make reach for another $20" one.

Surfing on the TDK wave

Ok. Then I'm gonna say it: If it wasn't for the music and the dramatic voice-over, this would look like a lame generic, Transformer type of CGI-overdosed movie.
No interesting plot, no real drama. The hero has to hit rock bottom to stand up stronger and brighter than before. That's supposed to give it more meaning but judging by the trailer it doesn't work for me. I'm willing to eat my words later but for now the word is "meh".

Meh...

Can't say that it stoked me, I'm sorry to say. Perhaps it was the soundtrack. Perhaps the lack of understanding the motivations of the villain. Perhaps confusion about why Tony Stark's face is torn up when it was inside the mask. All in all, not quite the trailer I wanted to see.

It's a TEASER trailer. Perhaps they'll give some hints as to what the villain's motivations are in the next trailer or you know, preferably THE FILM.

People complain when trailers show too much, and now apparently when they show too little. That's the best thing about Nolan's Batmans, nothing is really known of the plot going in, making for a better movie going experience.

broken mask? terrorist baddie with a distinct accent? rising back again after everything is destroyed? ominous tone throughout the whole trailer? sounds a bit familiar! hopefully they can really make it their own

Looks pretty solid. Mandarin has the rings, thats a big plus. All the marvel studio movies have been pretty good, so Im sure this will be great. Iron Man 2 was a bit disappointing especially for the last battle I agree it was way way too short. However there is a good movie in there if you ignore some scenes. Part 3 looks like they are back on track big time!

No idea what the hell is happening, but it looks pretty action-packed.

Mandarin should be Iron Man's baddest rogue. And in this trailer, he looks to be that king of villains.

Looks to be the best Iron Man yet.

I'm honestly impressed by the trailer and I hope to see it on the big screen in front of Skyfall. Let this happen, please.

Badass!

Shane Black looks to be doing what he does best, putting his heroes through the meat grinder.

Yes!

This is what I like to see! Looks great! I love it when the hero has to overcome a lot of adversity. That's what makes the best hero stories. It's fun when everything is all easy, but it's great to make the character more down to Earth. I cannot wait to see this! Everything about this looks awesome. 2013 is going to be the year that the movie-theaters bankrupt me.

Fantastic trailer

Let's just hope this movie lives up to it and isn't the debacle that was Iron Man 2.

Much Better!

Thank goodness, this already looks infinitely better than the god-awful part II.
Iron-Man was great during the Avengers, and I'm happy that they are seemingly going for a stronger story and learning from their mistakes. So much of these films hinges on the villains and even the little taste we get of Kingsley seems pretty badass.
It's pretty cool to hear him talking about the events of the Avengers in this trailer. As the Phases continue I wonder how much crossover there will be, especially

Fucking stoked!

It's 3:40am here and I'm dead tired. However watching that trailer was like a shot of adrenaline and I'm ready for my day now. That was outstanding. Love the sound of Mandarin (great dialogue as well) and some kick-ass action. I think this could be the best of the three so far.

Could be good. I know I will get some hate, but it has a Dark Knight feel to it. Just my opinion.
