The Swarm is coming

05.09.2007by:
Might as well get this out of the way first: this is NOT a remake of the 1978 disaster film about deadly bees... which makes me kind of sad.

Instead, this new THE SWARM is a planned adaptation of Frank Schatzing's novel about a looming ecological doomsday from the ocean, and the scientists trying to prevent it. Dino de Laurentiis and a group of German investors are throwing tons of money at the project (instead of, say, funding the actual research to avoid our impending global catastrophe), which is described as "THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW meets THE ABYSS".

Writer Ted Tally has been given the task of saving the planet via screenplay -- he's got some experience with the whole "turning books into movies" thing, and he's got the Oscar to prove it for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Extra Tidbit: The book apparently features ferocious whales, toxic eyeless crabs, and an intelligent life form called the Yrr.

Well...

I have to disagree with Fuzzy Jedi. Not all books become phenomenons like LOTR or Potter or Silence of the Lambs. Sure, they become bestsellers sometimes, but not always like the aforementioned books.

That doesn't mean there's not a good story to tell, and making a movie out of it could bring that story to more people than the book might have.

Now, all they need is a director that's not going to muck it up in the end and tarnish the author's work, because there is always that.

My thoughts are pretty much exactly the same as Mr. Pena's. I mean, come on: toxic eyeless crabs! They wander aimlessly and pollute everything in their path! Bwahahahaha!!!

Huh...

I'd rather see an action-er about killer bees. *Turns to Sci-Fi Channel* Ahhh, there we go.

God this kilss me. when will the studios learn that they need to let books, you know, come out and get a fan base and THEN turn it into a movie. A book has to be loved and people have to have a sort of admiration for it before the movie will do awesome. Look at LOTR or harry potter or even fucking Silence of the Lambs. People have loved and grown attached to those books before the were movies, instead of the movie coming out a year or two after the book, or worse, shudder, like Hanable Rising.
