Tron will no longer fight for the users; Disney pulls plug on Tron 3

05.29.2015

Bad news today for those of us who were looking forward to TRON: ASCENSION; Disney has elected to pull the plug on the TRON sequel. This comes as a bit of a surprise to me as TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski was set to return as well as both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde; prep on the film was underway and it was thought that TRON: ASCENSION would shoot in Vancouver this fall.

THR broke the news and, while they didn't give a reason for the cancellation, many suspect that the poor performance of TOMORROWLAND may have played a part in Disney's decision; that, or they needed to make room for yet another live-action adaption of one of their classic animated films. It's true that TRON: ASCENSION hadn't officially been given the green light yet, but it sure did seem like all the pieces were in place for the film to move forward. Whatever the reason, it's a shame.

TRON: LEGACY may not have been the greatest film but I thought that it did a great job at bringing TRON back into the world, not to mention that it featured a rockin' soundtrack. I had high hopes that TRON: ASCENSION would improve on what was built in LEGACY and deliver the ultimate TRON film, but I guess we're out of luck.

Reboot the Tron Franchise

it seemed that Tron was preparing for a reboot with new cast and crew, possible cameos by most of the original and Tron Legacy cast and a music score ala Hans Zimmer.

FUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
!!!!

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. Might not be the right movie but it sure fits. What the fuck Disney?!? I was so looking forward to this. No Legacy wasn't perfect but it was good. It was also one of the best theater experiences I've ever seen in my lifetime, and I'm old as fuck so thats saying something lol. I was looking forward to more eyegasms and eargasms in ascension. Thats the only way I can

Thats the only way I can describe the visuals and the perfect soundtrack. Disney can't be doing this because of lack of money. Fuck Marvel movies alone make Disney's wallet larger than most countries GDP. Whelp guess we gotta wait another 20 years and then I'm sure we'll see a "remake" of it lol.

Damn you, Lindelof!!!!

Disney, original movies are not bad. Sci-fi movies are not bad. Tron is not bad. Damon Lindelof is bad. Instead of canning a probable good movie, you can Lindelof and NEVER work with him again. DAMMIT!

Yeah, bad decision Disney.

I was really looking forward to another Tron film. One more to finish a trilogy. After a lot of pessimism on Tron: Uprising, I gave that a shot and loved it. I could care less for anime, but the story was so well done.

There's a lot of potential for a continuation on Tron, but Disney needs to stop marketing it to kids. Legacy was great to the people who loved the original, and these are the people that want more. If Disney swung a little more to the adult audience for the third Tron,

If Disney swung a little more to the adult audience for the third Tron, I think they could make a hit. If nothing else, a worthy box office pull. I'm not saying Legacy was a failure at this; far from it. But they were trying to market to a very wide audience, and the reaction wasn't strong enough to really bring back the franchise.

Shame.

Somehow movies I actually want sequels for (Tron: Legacy, Dredd) can't seem to get any, but other franchises keep on getting more. Maybe another studio will get the rights to make a 3rd film, similar to Chronicles of Narnia after Disney dropped them after 2 films.

Fuck. This. News.

But at least we're getting another Pirates of the Carribbean!!! Ugh. This is something I was worried about after Disney picked up LucasFilm and Marvel is that they would now be more choosy about their other properties because they don't really NEED them anymore. "It doesn't matter if Tron 3 gets made in a hurry because we have Avengers and Star Wars VII to make up for it. Whassat? We can cancel Tron completely and give the slot to a Pirates or Marvel film? Sweet! Pull that plug!" Booooo this

EDIT: Also, I often find myself in the minority of moviegoers who absolutely LOVED Tron Legacy. I understood and respected everything they did with that film and gobbled up every bit of fan service they graced me with.

Really Bummed

On a experiential level, seeing Tron:Legacy in IMAX 3D is one of the best moviegoing experiences I've ever had. Sure, there was some problems with the script, but I also enjoyed all of the cast (I do feel like Garrett Hedlund will be a star), and the world Kosinski was able to bring to life was stunning. Of course, nothing else needs to be said about Daft Punk's soundtrack... one of the best! I am really bummed about this news. If they had a tighter script yet brought the same aesthetic flare,

Hopefully this is just a delay, and not the end of this Tron series!

The second movie was boring.

The second movie never warranted a sequel. Everything felt forced and the acting was terrible. It had a good soundtrack, but that's about it.

The world of Tron is incredibly original, visually stunning, and immersive. I would have loved to dive deeper into this rabbit hole. Meanwhile we get a 5th shitty pirates movie.

Of course Disney

Sell the rights, drop the budget to "Oblivion" level, and give Kosinski free reign. I personally loved the sequel and I think there is much more story to tell.

End Of Line Man.

This is bad news. I thought Legacy was a 'solid' film. By no means perfect but it was a good enough start to regenerating a potential franchise and expanding on that beautiful universe. Was really looking forward to seeing Kosinski and Hedlund return for this.

Good, Legacy sucked anyway very boring & lazy to me. Now it seems like Disney will now have to rely on Marvel & Star Wars movies.

Not heartbroken.

That releases Kosinski for something else bigger and better. Same with Hedlund.

Sure the movie was kind of dumb, but Joseph Kosinski has vision. Tron 2 looked beautiful. I hope Disney gives another company a chance to make it.

I'm really wondering how Tommorowland could have anything to do with this. Disney owns Marvel and have a Star Wars movie coming. Basically, they have more sure hits than any other studio out there and a Tron sequel is far from the riskiest option there is. It feels like they're just leaving money on the table.

When it boils down to it, money is the only reason they do anything. Tomorrowland was the same target audience Disney had for Tron. Since that failed, I can see how they see Tron as a risky venture.

I saw Tomorrowland Memorial Day weekend, and I thought it was great. It could have been better, but if nothing else was a fantastic starting point if Disney had balls to grow it.

Same audience or not - and I would argue that Tron' has more in common with Star Wars then Tomorrowland, which had a younger protagonist - they're both separate films and different concepts. Seeing one of them fail tells you nothing about the potential success of the other.

Well....Shit.

Other than Disney's Marvel & Lucasfilm projects....this was the "ONE" project I was looking forward to the most in the coming years. Lemme just say this again...SHIT!

And if the rumors based on "Tomorrowland's" (EXCELLENT movie!) lackluster performance are truly to blame for "Tron 3" being cancelled....It's just my opinion that CEO Bob Iger needs to get his head out of his ass. I get that as a corporation they need to respect the bottom line...but C'mon. Sounds like the Exec's are just

Just because a Sci-Fi / Fantasy adventure didn't do as well as predicted...does that REALLY necessarily mean that *every* genre movie they have in the pipeline from here on out will bomb? Hell No it doesn't?

"John Carter" (another EXCELLENT movie, btw) also another Sci-fi / Fantasy flopped and Disney sure as shit didn't halt the process on "Oz The Great & Powerful" or "Big Hero 6" did they?

But I guess Disney feels that the world really does need more Ice Princesses' & Dalmatians & a Prequel Trilogy to "Cars" saga. Man...Fuck this news. Sorry for the rant, fellow schmoes...Just lettin'' off some fanboy steam here.

So a 50% movie is "excellent"? Seriously, can you name the last "excellent" movie that scored that low?

John Carter was so mediocre my 14 year-old took 4 tries on TV to get through it because she thought it was boring.

Weird. You would think a sequel to a 35 year old franchise would seem like a great idea in the current environment what with Mad Max: Fury Road getting sterling reviews and showing excellent box office staying power and Star Wars has great pre-release buzz as well. Seems like it's prime time for Tron: Ascension
