Updated: Edgar Wright has dropped out of Ant-Man over creative differences

May. 24, 2014by: Alex Maidy

News as to Edgar Wright's reason for leaving ANT-MAN at the end of this story.

When Edgar Wright was announced as the director of Marvel's ANT-MAN, we all rejoiced at such a cool and unique director getting the opportunity to make a superhero movie. Wright himself had been talking about the project for years before it became a reality and Marvel head Kevin Feige seemed to be completely in his corner. Disney even bumped the date from later in the year to the prime July 17, 2015 release date the film currently holds. Then news came of the casting of Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas as the leads in the movie with supporting cast members including Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, and many more. Now comes the unfortunate news that Wright has left the film.

According to an official release from Marvel:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

The fact that the statement says that the decision to part ways was amicable does not necessarily mean it was. But, we may never know unless Marvel or Edgar Wright reveal the truth. This is the first time a Marvel project has lost a director in this manner. Directors like Jon Favreau and Kenneth Branagh have been replaced for sequels to films, but this is a new wrinkle in Marvel's otherwise impeccable armor.

We know from glimpses and tidbits from Wright that he was going for more of a heist film and something with a different feel than the other Marvel movies to date. Could the studio have had issues with going in such a distinct direction from the rest of the cinematic universe? Who knows. All I know is that I was excited for ANT-MAN primarily because of Edgar Wright. The fact they are looking to replace him and not adjust the release date could mean almost anything. Feel free to let your imaginations run wild, but we will let you know as soon as we learn anything.

ANT-MAN is slated to hit theaters July 17, 2015, for now.

UPDATE:

Latino Review claims to have the inside scoop as to why Edgar Wright may have left ANT-MAN. Per their sources, Wright was not fired from the production due to budgetary or creative reasons, but it may have had to do with interference from higher ups at Marvel/Disney. They claim that Marvel brought in new writers to try and change the tone and "morality" of ANT-MAN while also incorporating more franchise characters.

We have been hearing for a long time that Wright and Kevin Feige were on the same page, so this may have come from above Feige. After six weeks of script doctoring, Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish were apparently very dissatisfied with the changes and decided to leave rather than compromise their vision for ANT-MAN. It is unknown if Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, or any other cast will be leaving the project but it doesn't seem likely at this point. Stay tuned for more as this story develops.

No doubt Ant-Man is meant to be an origin story for the hero, but it certainly has to fit in with the overall Marvel Universe and not be a complete stand alone film, as Ant-Man is eventually an Avenger. perhaps the re-writes and Studio interference is to make sure the story has an opening for the broader Marvel Universe and future Avengers films? I'm not ready to declare Ant-Man DOA like the Fantastic Four re-boot.

This film went from a sure fire win to a 'uh-oh, the studio is messing with it and it may have troubles" quick.

Actually that's kinda the thing. Nobody cared about an Ant-Man movie, untill Edgar Wright was involved. He was the reason most of us cared, but now that he left , you're right; Who gives a fuck about Ant-Man?

Remember when Disney first bought Marvel they promised not to change anything and to let Marvel act as an independent company? Yeah, we all knew that was bullshit.

Sadly not surprised

Edgar Wright is a perfectionist. He'll do one shot a hundred times until it fits exactly with his vision. I was surprised when he got the job in the first place since I never really saw him fitting in with the big studio crowd, but while i'm not surprised I am disappointed. Might still be a good movie, but much like Guillermo del Toro and the Hobbit, I will always wonder what Wright's vision for the movie would have been. *sigh*

no blame for Edgar Wright?

Listen, I like Edgar Wright. A lot. I know he's been attached to this movie forever. But why would he bail at the last minute like this? You want to make Ant Man, you have to play ball with the big studio. It's that simple. I have a hard time believing that his vision could not be salvaged in any way so the only solution was to quit. Unfortuantely we all don't have jobs we can just walk away from when we disagree with what our bosses want us to do and leave all of the people that were hired

Unfortuantely we all don't have jobs we can just walk away from when we disagree with what our bosses want us to do and leave all of the people that were hired under us in limbo. It's incredibly frustrating when this kind of thing is done by directors, including Matthew Vaughan and Darron Aronofsky. I'm just having a really hard time believing Disney executives have all of a sudden parachuted in to fix what isn't broken.

How quickly have we all forgotten that the reason Pym wasn't the creator of Ultron was because of Wright's Ant Man script that has existed for years. Marvel was willing to work around that, and everyone on the internet complained and complained about it. But now that he's bailed we are all saying "But what about Wright's vision????!?!?!?".

They kept saying how this would be a funny heist movie? So maybe his character literally wouldn't have had an arc. No way to join the Avengers, no way to integrate into the rest of the Marvel universe.

I'm with you....seems like Wright had a hissy fit and quit. No way Marvel pulled the plug unless it was a complete train wreck.

Fanboys lol...

The guy did some good comedy, and suddenly he's the ONLY acceptable director for Ant-Man?! It's Marvel, they can throw a rock in any direction and they'll hit a dozen good directors that want to work with them. Cast is still intact, the sky is not falling, they'll replace him within a week.

I don't have a problem with marvel wanting more of their universe in the movie, they could've told him what they wanted and let him make the changes, sure, but they didn't and here we are. It's still

"EVERY PERSON here that voted red on this, will still be there opening weekend".

With the exception of course for those people who have a wedding to go to, those who are traveling abroad, folks have relatives visiting, people who have to work overtime, or had their car break down, abducted by aliens...etc.

But yes, the remainder of the people who voted red will all be there. :P

Second time this has happened to a Marvel Character!

First, Fox let Darren Arnofsky leave The Wolverine which would have been an amazing, original comic book film and now Wright is off Ant-Man. While The Wolverine worked out well even though we likely got a lesser movie, Ant-Man seems almost catastrophic! The only real draw to the Ant-Man film was the unique, offbeat style of Wright...the guy they choose to replace him is likely going to be crucified barring an amazing, out of left field choice.

I thought Fox didn't have much to do with that? Ultimately, Darren want to commit to being gone from his family so long. Darren had just come off one of the most profitable movies im of all time - Black Swan - and I'm sure Fox wasn't excited about his version, I'm pretty sure I remember it being that he left the project himself (was his wife pregnant?). I agree with you though. Maybe they'll get Darren for this, though I don't think he fits well.

WB will actually hire a director and allow them to have a vision. Even the Harry Potter movies have different styles depending on who's behind the camera. Wright would rock a Flash movie.

While I like Shaun Of The Dead, the three movies weren't great, didn't make a lot of money, and were basically slapstick. I really hope Paul Rudd drops out now too, I'm sure the idea of working with Edgar Wright was the main catalyst for him signing on, and Paul Rudd in a Wright "Ant Man" would have been great, Rudd in a formulaic Marvel movie, not so much. Hopefully Rudd and Douglas leave the project and leave Marvel with their dicks in their hands.

I sort of agree. Rudd wasn't my first choice for Ant Man, but under Wright's direction it seemed like a perfect combo. Now with Wright leaving, I'm not so sure.

I do like the suggestion of Sam Raimi stepping in and directing this. I think he could do wonders with a superhero character and film like this.

It's a shame that the director ultimately drops out of a project he's been working on for quite some time. But on the other hand, and I'll probably get a lot of thumbs down for this, I never really liked that Ant Man costume and no matter how awesome Scott Pilgrim was I don't think his style would fit Marvel's cinematic universe.

6 weeks ago Marvel took the script off them and gave the writing assignment to two very low credit writers. One of the writers were from Marvels in house writing team. Edgar stayed cool, agreed to stay on the project, and read the draft.

The script came in this week and was completely undone. Poorer, homogenized, and not Edgars vision. Edgar met with Marvel on Friday to formally exit and the announcement went out directly after.

Edgar & Joe were upset by the sudden, out of nowhere lack of faith in them as filmmakers. Fiege had always batted for them but this felt like it came from the higher ups."

Plus James Gunn added on Facebook

Sometimes you have friends in a relationship. You love each of them dearly as individuals and think they're amazing people. When they talk to you about their troubles, you do everything you can to support them, to keep them together, because if you love them both so much doesn't it make sense they should love each other? But little by little you realize, at heart, they aren't meant to be together - not because there's anything wrong with either of them, but they just don't have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way. They don't make each other happy. Although it's sad to see them split, when they do, you're surprisingly relieved, and excited to see where their lives take them next.

It's easy to try to make one party "right" and another party "wrong" when a breakup happens, but it often isn't that simple. Or perhaps it's even more simple than that - not everyone belongs in a relationship together. It doesn't mean they're not wonderful people.

And that's true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn't a person, but I think you get what I mean.

Interesting to note that while Drew Goddard left the Daredevil series, he was replaced by a writer who worked with him and Joss Whedon on Angel, Steven DeKnight. I don't know how well that bodes for the series, but it is an interesting connection. My only question is whether or not Drew Goddard is still writing and directing the pilot episode, considering most reports say he is no longer showrunner.

I don't know a lot ab Ant Man and I never found what I knew interesting. I was interested in seeing EW direct a MCU super hero film starring Paul Rudd. Obviously some characters would not work, but for the most part the character they were going to do didn't matter to me. I think I'm in the minority of really not liking Wright's last film - At World's End (or something close to that title). I only saw it in the theatre and I even thought I might need to give it another shot, but haven't

I think I'm in the minority of really not liking Wright's last film - At World's End (or something close to that title). I only saw it in the theatre and I even thought I might need to give it another shot, but haven't yet. I just didn't like it. It wasn't very funny. I didn't like Simon's character - I wish he would've actually played more of his usually characters. And I didn't see any good satire like the last two. Maybe there wasn't suppose to be, but I thought so since it's a trilogy (and I loved the first two films of the trilogy). With that said, the action scenes in that movie, the fight scenes, were INCREDIBLE. Like in the bathroom. It was one of the best choreographed original fight scenes that wasn't a matrix knock off and I could actually see what was going in. And it was fun. Prolly better than all the fight scenes in the Nolan Batman movies and the majority of blockbuster action movie fight scenes (cap 2 had some great, fairly realistic stuff too). That was what made me so much more excited for Ant Man. I wonder who they'll get to bring his energy to this film? Looking forward to hearing more about why this happened. With the picture Whedon posted, it appears the higher ups were being dicks, and that's not a good sign for any Disney property. Here's hoping the boot Gareth Edwards and give Wright a Star Wars gig. I guess they don't have to boot GE, but I'd rather him focus on Godzilla and I completely trust Wright with any Star Wars material. But I guess that's still the same higher ups? ... : /

wasn't even shooting yet

I think what most people are missing is that this movie had not even begun principal photography yet and was supposed to come out July 2015. I think maybe that had something to do with this decision as well...

Probably going to get bumped back to its original November spot.

Whatever the reasons, I don't think this was made lightly by either side. I'm real curious who the next director will be. I'd love to hear that Sam Raimi is picking up the helm. I doubt that is the case, but I think he could bring the right tone for this film.

Bummer...

Wright was a huge reason I was looking forward to this. It's unfortunate this happened but what can you do? All we can do now as fans is hope that their replacement director is adequate.

The last time I was this gutted about Marvel cinematic universe related news was when Norton was dropped from what was then my best Marvel movie thus far, The Incredible Hulk. In the end, the replacement was more than just okay. So whilst this leaves a bad taste in the mouth, I'm hopeful it'll still work out well when the final product is presented to the masses.

Well...

The cast still seems to still be in place. As well as the general idea. In all honesty, it's not that surprising... Unfortunate, yes ,but not surprising. I'm sure Wright had a brilliant idea 10 years ago, but that must have changed with the inception of the MCU. I wish he was still directing, but hopefully it still has the vibe Wright was going for, just a little more adjusted to the MCU we have now.

In other words, Wright wanted to shoot this thing like a film and add his own flavor to it, but the Marvel Studios bosses were like, "No, no. It needs to look like an average episode of prime time television like all of our movies do. Don't try to get creative with it." Another creative casualty to the Disney Machine.

I actually think Marvel Studios should be blamed for this, not Disney. Kevin Feige primarily runs Marvel and he has had conflicts with directors in the past. I think of him like John Lasseter: he has a certain vision for his films, and he will let directors go to see the result he wants. The producer holds the power at Marvel, and that seems consistent throughout their movie history.

Yeah, you're right. It really is Feige who fires people at the drop of a hat. Honestly, it seems like if anyone has the tiniest disagreement with him they're out the door.

So the rest of the Marvel movies look like an average television episode? Must be working out fine, considering the grosses of all those [link] Marvel will find a new director, and even more positive everyone will still "tune in to primetime" once its released, just like we did for every other Marvel movie released. See you in line!

This sucks

but, as someone else noted, this lemon could become lemonade if they brought in Joe Cornish (ATTACK THE BLOCK) to replace him. Cornish worked on the ANT MAN script, and he would be a great fit, especially with the humour and action sequences.

Only problem is Cornish basically owes his whole career to Wright. Hopefully this truly was an amicable breakup and relationships wont be strained. If it was a messy departure and Cornish takes the job, I feel like him and Wright would never work together again.

May`be he didn`t like Kevin Feige breathing over his shoulder *quotation fingers*suggesting changes to Edgar Wrights vision of Ant Man.Edgar Wright spent so long on pre production,i think he first talked about Ant Man in 2006? And was so passionate about this movie, well this is very sad news.I feel very sad for Edgar Wright it would of been the hardest decision career wise for him too make.

Ant Man was gonna be the hardest to sallow and I felt like Edgar's unique flair for comedy would've done it as good as Kenneth Branagh's Shakespearian background did for Thor. Now I'm a little worried. The cast is still great, so let's see what director takes it on...

A loss yes but no that big of a deal. This was probably because Wright, who has had this written for so many years, was probably unwilling to change the script to fit with the overall universe. That would be my guess. Wanted a standalone and not something with parts of the universe. Oh well.

Not that surprised... this was just too good to be true... I hope they won't end up looking ridiculous at the end with the final product, since I find the cast sympathetic... Edgar Wright was kind of odd choice but I was expecting something different and at the same time something beautiful... Hope he finds soon something new to direct...

I like me some Edgar Wright, and my heart goes out to the man for the amount of time that could be viewed as wasted, hopefully he can take this experience and use it to learn and make better future choices when it comes to big budget studio productions. He was announced as director for Ant Man the same time they announced Favs for the 1st Iron Man and Letterier for Hulk.

With that said, from the very BEGINING I felt he was wrong for this project, then I saw the Comiccon footage and thought nope, I was wrong, this is in good hands. Then they announced Paul Rudd and all initial worry and concern came back. Ant man has been the leader of the Avengers (arguably) the 2nd most through comic history. Rudd is not the man to takeover for Downey. Marvel has proved me wrong 99% I doubted their casting choices, but with this news I hope Rudd leaves with him. Rest of the cast is great but we need someone who is cocky, confident, and has major emotional issues caused by his super intelligence. An amazing fighter who hates fighting.

CHRIS PINE has been my number 1 choice since I saw the first Star Trek (reboots) and to me would be perfect.

I bet Edgar was border-lining slapstick comedy and Marvel doesn't want that. Phase 2 introduced that the directors of these movies are hired to do a paint by numbers job, explains the last 2 (of 3) new directors last hired had little to no expirence directing movies. Luckily the producers at Marvel have changed this corrupt system to a working corrupt system.

In MARVEL we trust, they are untouchable.

Plus, all accounts point toward Dr. Strange taking over the Tony Stark/Downey Jr. role in the MCU, not Ant-Man.

Not sure who you're talking about with these "2 of 3" directors in phase 2 who bent to studio pressure. Iron Man 3 was clearly a Shane Black film. Thor 2 was definitely an Alan Taylor film. They might not have been great, but the directors definitely had a little wiggle room to make each film their own. James Gunn looks like he has had the same amount of freedom with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Akskier the 3 directors I meant by 3 last hired were James Gunn, Russo Brothers, and Alan Taylor, who (correct me if I am wrong) had never directed a movie before. The Russo brothers had directed 1 maybe 2 films in their career and the only one I can remember is You, Me and Durpree. I was excluding Gunn as the 1 that has a liitle expirence directing big budget film. The other two don't. How is this incorrect?

I can't even begin to imagine how frustrating it must be to spend the amount of time he did on Ant-Man only to walk away this late in the game. At this point with Marvel Studios, it almost doesn't matter who directs because the producers are the ones calling the shots. What a bummer. Wright could have made something special if given the freedom.

This is an area DC could exploit to crush Marvel. Hire directors with their unique passionate visions for characters and allow them to execute with little interference, just like Nolan.

Well, this sucks. One of the best parts this film had going for itself was having Wright on board to direct. It's a real shame because all of his previous films have been excellent and I feel like he would have brought something really new, fresh, and exciting with Ant Man and the beginning of Phase 3.

Hopefully Marvel brings in someone just as talents and unique. Or maybe they'll hire Gareth Edwards.

Hopefully Marvel brings in someone just as talents and unique. Or maybe they'll hire Gareth Edwards.

Was joking about Edwards. Tried to be funny since he is the hot commodity of directors right now.

WOW

I'm seriously crushed by this. I want to scream Wright Rudd and Marvel all just sounded incredible.

Marvel probably wanted Ant-Man to have a better connection with the rest of the films, but Edgar preferred his film acting as a standalone. Too bad. I wonder who they've found as a replacement.

I really find Edgar Wright overrated. However, the trend of Marvel and directors parting over created differences is slightly worrisome.

Good

Wright is better off working from his own material, or at the very least doing something different from a superhero movie that's bound to blend into the lot. After the incredible The World's End, I was bummed he would be adapting an existing character. His talent comes from creating original films, so I hope he moves onto an original project without delay.

Scott Pilgrim was a comic book adaptation that he directed, and he managed to bring a lot of his own style to it. Working within a genre with established characters does not mean good directors can't create something distinct from other films in that genre. I assume Edgar Wright's vision was unique, and Marvel didn't share it. It seems to me Marvel has a vision and they tend to clash with anyone who may have different ideas.

I hate to say it...

...but Marvel has a bad reputation of not playing ball with directors who have their own personal vision of what to do instead of toeing the company line. Look at Alan Taylor with Thor: The Dark World. The editing and the run-time were completely taken out of his hands, and it led to a lower quality of movie. Now the director who's been collaborating with them ever since Phase ONE is leaving because of "creative differences"? This sucks. Terrible, terrible news.

Not the first time it's happened

This is terrible news considering how much fan interest was generated by Edgar Wright's appointment as director in the first place. But it's not the first time Marvel has ousted a director months into pre-production. Patty Jenkins was replaced on Thor 2 due to "creative differences" causing Natalie Portman to contemplate quitting that film. The general public ultimately won't care about this behind-the-scenes stuff but like Darren Aronofsky's "Wolverine", we'll always wonder what could have

I really did not like Thor 2 at all either, I'll now wait to see Antman reviews before going in.

No, I don't think it's money. I think Marvel is a producer-centric company, meaning they have a vision for their movies and they hire directors willing to follow that vision. Edgar Wright conflicted with it, so he's gone.

Gaddamit. That is the worst news of the day. I was only looking forward to this movie BECAUSE of Edgar Wright.

The new guy better not be a director-for-hire...

Just want to point out, unless they decide to push the movie back, it will absolutely be a director-for-hire. But it is possible it'll be a very talented director-for-hire. One can hope.

Marvel might have a contingency plan, but as many others have mentioned part of the excitement and anticipation was Wright's involvement, that being said i don't think there taking the matter lightly, it just sucks, i wonder who could bring as much humor and awesomeness as Wright

Well so much for that movie. It was a nice long dream.

I was wondering why we hadn't gotten a notice about the movie filming yet, because it was supposed to have started like almost 3 weeks ago. That's too bad. Even worse is we are NEVER going to get any straight answers on this one because Edgar is NOTORIOUSLY tight-lipped on gossip. It took like over two years after the fact just to find out that he was offered a part in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and turned it down; and even that he was really hesitant to talk about because he thought it would be

While I fully expect some sort of acknowledgement from Wright and Feige about how this or that just led to things not happening, and no ill will from either party, this is a major bummer considering all the time Edgar Wright has already put into prepping this thing. I can only hope that it means we'll get another movie by the man sooner rather than later.
