Normally I save the DVD and Blu-ray announcements for the home video freaks at the DVD Clinic but every once in a while, we get news that I'm sure everyone wants to hear about. Just this morning Universal officially announced that the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy will hit Blu-ray on October 26th.

The new "25th Anniversary Edition" of the trilogy will feature over two hours of new bonus features from the three films including "Tales from the Future," a retrospective documentary featuring never-before-seen interviews with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale and Steven Spielberg. The documentary is broken up into these six parts:

- In the Beginning...: Delve into the genesis of the project, casting, re-casting, the DeLorean, sets and overall pre-production.
- Time to Go: Production stories through the release of the first film.
- Keeping Time: The score and the songs of the Back to the Future Trilogy.
- Time Flies: Learn more about how the sequel came about, the futuristic look, the special and visual effects, recreating 1955 and more.
- Third Time’s the Charm: Learn about building a western town, Doc Brown’s love story, the casting of Mary Steenburgen, the train sequence and completing the Trilogy.
- The Test of Time: Back to the Future becomes a phenomenon! President Reagan quotes the film, the Back to the Future ride opens at Universal Studios theme park and fans rebuild the iconic DeLorean. The film’s cast and crew take a look back and discuss why these beloved movies live on.

Other features new to the "25th Anniversary Edition" include "The Physics of Back To The Future," which discusses the science behind the film with best-selling physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, and the never-before-seen storyboard sequence from the original nuclear test site ending of the film. The discs will also include all the features from the original DVD trilogy released in 2005.

The Blu-ray will also include some exclusive features including an archival featurette hosted by Leslie Nielsen that ran on NBC prior to the first movie hitting theaters plus BD-Live features and Universal's U-Control features.

So far no pricing has been announced but it should be noted that these are being offered as a trilogy box-set and not as individual discs.

Favorite movie of all time. Most wanted Blu ray release hands down. It says it has all the features from the original box set but I wonder if this includes the stuff from the extra disk that came with the individual release of the first film. I know the Leslie Nielsen feature was one of them.

When Spielberg still produced great films
BTTF, Gremlins, Roger Rabbit and many more 80s classics. And now he produces the Transformers movies...

No Love for III?
I was always baffled by the extremely negative response to BTTF III. As a kid that was one of my favorite movies and I literally watched it every single day. Sure the first one is the best made overall, but the third is so much fun. That final showdown on the train is brilliantly entertaining.

Does anyone know if this would be worth buying? What I mean to say is: would it look any better than the dvd?

I think this is one where the restoration and conversion to HD will be very noticeable and worth the money spent to upgrade. Plus, I am a features kind of dude, and the Features on this set seem to be amazing!

Great news! If BTTF was released this year they would go back to 1980. Sorry if I made you feel old.

Lame, is there no Back to the Future: The Ride footage being included?? That is why I never picked up the other releases, cuz I figured that would be on the eventual Blu Ray. I own the ORIGINAL DVD Set (the one with the incorrect aspect ratios) so i am looking forward to update to Blu, but i am hoping something got lost in translation and the Back To The Future Ride footage WIL be on the set!

Awesome! Thanks for the info and I'm happy that the footage will be on there for you. I wish the ride were still around for you though. Sounds like it must have been quite a memorable one.

The ride is no more, it was replaced by The Simpsons Ride at Universal. I LOVED the BTTF ride, so having the footage from the ride is important to me for Nostalgia sake. but i have read on other sites that The Ride footage WILL be on this set, so i am stoked!!

What is it about the ride footage that's so interesting? Is there additional film footage? Sorry for the question.

They need to put in some clips of Eric Stoltz as Marty. Everyone wants to see that, but they refuse to show it for some silly reason.

This is fantastic news.. and it's even better that it's coming out of Universal. Hopefully we'll get Jaws and Jurassic Park sometime next year as well.. The only downside is nobody wants the JP trilogy.. it better be on separate discs.

Finally! BTTF is one of the greatest trilogies ever made and I've been wanting this on blu-ray for a long time. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed, hoping the transfer is a good one, because I (like many, many others) was absolutely dying for Ghostbusters on blu-ray and was sorely disappointed when I bought it. I'm looking forward to checking out the new special features though.

I need to rewatch part 2 . . .
Haven't seen it since it first came out on VHS. In my mind, it was a big let down. Thought 3 was even worse. Part 1: CLASSIC.

II follows the darker sequel route; after a recent rewatch (having not seen it in about 20 years or something), I dug it..the glimpse we get into the future was so cool. I still maintain that III sucked, however. The first is undoubtedly the best..
