What did you think of...World War Z?

Jun. 21, 2013by: JoBlo

We've been writing about the saga behind the scenes of WORLD WAR Z for what seems like years now, but those stories are over for now, the film has been released and we've already provided you with 2 differing takes on the film, one from JimmyO who gave it a 7/10 and enjoyed most of it, and Chris Bumbray's review of 5/10, in which he praised 2/3 of the film, but didn't think the final act really worked (we didn't print Eric Walkuski's review, but he had it at 7.5/10). But as per most summer blockbuster films, we want to know what you thought of the film so please feel free to POST YOUR OWN REVIEW in our strike back section below (or to your Movie Fan Central profile) and we'll continue to update the Rotten Tomatoes and MFC reviews over the next few days as well. So far, they're in perfect agreement at 68/100!

Rotten Tomatoes: 202 reviews, avg score: 67%
Movie Fan Central: 6 reviews, avg score: 7.0/10

Extra Tidbit: Did you know that the novel on which the film is based is written by the son of famed writer/director Mel Brooks? (Max Brooks)

Solid and intense thriller. Also, there's zombie makeup instead of all CGI!

First off, I was thrilled to see a big budget Hollywood zombie film have actually actors in zombie looking makeup, better than the CGI zombies in "I Am Legend". "World War Z", for all it's production problems the film was a solid effective summer thriller, and the PG-13 rating did upset me, it's still gritty and brutal at times. Sure, the film could've been better, but so what? For what it's worth, "World War Z" is good.

I dug it a lot!

I went into World War Z expecting a decent if not entertaining piece of summer blockbuster. I got more than I bargained for and was thoroughly pleased with the end product. Yes, you can definitely tell where the rehashed final third act is placed but I didn't let it deter my experience with the film. I found it to be a gritty thriller that is sure to attract more people to the zombie genre. It is watered down with little to no gore but I still have faith that a sequel or any other adaptation

I had read the novel several years ago and treated this film as one of the many account-based interviews that were the basis for it. Several people may take up arms against me with that statement but that's how I view it. I believe that if there were to be a faithful representation of the novel to be adapted, it would be a better fit to present it as a television series on HBO, AMC, A&E, etc.
Overall, I was pleased with what I saw. I'll definitely buy it on Blu-ray when it releases. In the meantime, I may go check it out again.

I am a big fan of the book and was wary of the changes but if you put the book aside and watch this for what it is, it's a decent flick.

I thought it was exciting, and thrilling. Only a few parts had me wanting an R rating, not so much for gore, but to make certain things seem scarier, or tense.

I dug it. Not standard zombie fare at all. Usually, with a zombie flick comes a certain amount of campy. None to be found here. Its a straight up, "what would it be like if this actually happened" type flick. It kinda lost me in the third act (saw it coming way early on) but the first two acts are incredibly intense, with some sheer horror (especially in scope. Some of the city flyover shots are terrifying to look at and imagine) sprinkled in. Very solid film, despite an occasional flaw. I'll

I didn't go into WWZ expecting the best zombie flick ever or expecting to see the book of the same title..if you did, then that's your bad. After all the issues, re-writes, re-shoots, rumors..I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't sit there bitching about dialogue or the lack of certain characters emotional depth. I took it for what it's worth, it wasn't made to be an Oscar contender..its a big budget summer movie. 7 out of 10.

Very tense and well executed...BUT--

--as much as I liked it, it was an exercise in spinning my wheels at the end. The movie did not fulfill its promise of doing the one impossible thing that most other Zombie movies fail to do and that is: find the source of the outbreak and what cold be done to kill it at its source. I know this can be easily argued off by stating that it probably WOULD be impossible, BUT the trailers set me up as this being the GOAL of the movie...and for 90% of the movie, that is exactly what our hero is

Probably will be seeing it this upcoming weekend. Am I the only one bothered that Marc Forster keep wanting to imitate the Bourne movies with his own. I remember reading about Quantum of Solace, and he mentioned making it "Bourne-like," and in a recent interview in Empire, he again puts World War Z with a "Bourne-like" style. If Marc Forster wants to make a Bourne movie, then pitch one with Universal, I'm sure it will be better than Legacy.

Worst movie I have seen all year.

It was so forgettable and boring. The effects were shit and they go out of their way to make sure no violence is shown on screen. There is no tension and the plot was just boring. How do you make a zombie movie without putting zombies in it? The entire movie was filmed in shaky cam and anyone who liked this movie must also be entertained by a piece of string like a cat.

Enjoyed it a lot. Very entertaining. Most of the scenes created a lot of tension and some very entertaining situations. Didn't really care for a lot of the CG, especially the Jerusalem action piece, but overall I thought that the zombies were creative and they managed to make them effective. Brad Pitt was great as the lead and did a good job as an action lead. It was a somewhat refreshing take on the zombie film.

i can't tell if it was good on it's own merit, or just seemed good because all comparable-type movies were so bad lately. i totally expected this to be one of those types of movies that has an intriguing idea and good set up, then completely becomes stupid by the end and you leave thinking "awww man, it could have been so much better". but it wasn't too bad. the zombies themselves were probably the worst part. everyone was laughing when they came on the screen. overall, i give it a solid B- out

Very much walked out saying

Saw it last night, and I like I said above, I walked out with a very simple "It was alright."
I don't know about the rest of you, but my problems with the film had nothing to do with the ending. My issues were with the beginning. About 200 seconds after the main titles, the attacks begin. I felt we needed WAY more time getting to know Gerry and his family, as well as establish the world which was about to crumble. I felt we needed WAY more time getting to know Gerry and his family, as well as establish the world which was about to crumble. I'm not saying we needed an hour of story before the zombies attack, but it just felt like the movie began, and right then and there the world ended. Everyone just kind of accepted it, and because it was so quick, it was hard to fully invest in everybody.

On the plus side, Brad Pitt did a good job as usual. But even so, I think he could've done more with the role. His character was just kind of bland. He didn't need to be Han Solo or anything, but just give him a little more meat other than "I have to protect my family." Also, I thought the Israel scene was very cool and well done. The epic size of the zombies was really cool.

I honestly had no problems with the ending. It needed to scale back and slow things down at some point. The first 2/3 was filled with watching millions of people turn into zombies. They needed to slow it down, and I liked the way the finished it out. What I DIDN'T like was the "perfect coincidence" that everyone on the plane died except for our 2 main characters. So you're telling me there's 200 people on the plane, and every single of them either got sucked out or died in the crash EXCEPT for Gerry and his soldier? Come on.

So as I said, this was a great example of a film where the positives of the film were quite good, and the bad stuff just brought the film down. What's weird is that this film really didn't have any plot holes or huge storytelling issues. It was just too rushed at the beginning to establish the world which was going on. I get that the source material was about misc. stories about the zombie invasion, but if you're going to deviate that much from it, deviate the whole way. Or just call it something else.

I'm one of those people who excuses a summer blockbuster for being void of a little story for the sake of pure entertainment, but even I didn't like World War Z. Brad Pitt's character could have been played by anyone from Bradley Cooper to Gerard Butler to Clive Owen. His family had almost zero emotional depth, and the third act was laughable with loads of unintentional humor and bad, bad acting on the part of the "zombies". And for a movie that openly uses the word "zombies", it really isn't a zombie movie at all. It had sissy-level gore and a bunch of people biting one another. Not even devouring, just biting. A 5-month old puppy could inflict more damage to the flesh than these "zombies".

WWZ really just fails on all levels. The budget is wasted on big, eye-candy scenes and large landscapes but does nothing to make this a genuinely frightening experience. I wasn't expecting half of the Walking Dead thanks to the PG13 rating, but in the end this movie is a testament to how good that show really is, and why a big budget and A-list actors don't always guarantee good movies.

Very surprised

I really am surprised with how this turned out it was a very intense, fun, popcorn film. It reminded me of PG-13 28 days later. My only thing is the ending, that was weak. But they did it to make more. Which IDK how they can LOL.

I was surprised that I liked it. I thought it was going to turn out to be a mess, but I was invested and I wanted to see Gerry succeed. Also helps that Brad Pitt is always a great leading man and that there was a straightforward narrative to latch on to. A relatively decent 7 out of 10 for me.

Worse Excuse for a zombie film

I believe we all just witnessed the worlds first PG zombie film, the Walking Dead shows more violence on cable tv. All the action scenes were in the previews....f*ck it! I would rather watch Battleship.

So-so

It was decent. Wasn't great. I enjoyed the different approach to the zombie genre. The cgi was really really bad, and the pg-13 rating really hurt it, and I am not one who usually concerns myself with ratings. Other then that it was entertaining enough to give it a 7/10 from me.

Brad Pitts company, Plan B Entertainment, acquired the rights to the book a few years ago but the film has had, if rumour is to be believed, quite a torturous journey to the multiplexes.

The film tells the story of Gerry Lane (Pitt), an ex-UN employee who has retired to spend more time with his family. But when a worldwide zombie pandemic threatens mankind, he is forced to spring into action. He sets off on a globetrotting adventure to such far-flung destinations as Korea, India, Israel and, erm, Wales, in a effort to discover the source of the outbreak and find perhaps even find a cure. And, thats it really.

World War Z is a film that arrives with the dreaded troubled production label. There has been a huge amount of negative hype surrounding its long journey to the screen a ballooning budget, massive rewrites, extensive reshoots, and reports of a very strained relationship between Pitt and the director, Marc Forster (who also made the awful Quantum of Solace). However, the trailers DID look promising. And early word suggested that maybe the film wasnt quite as bad as many had feared.

So, finally, World War Z is here. Is it any good?

No. Its not. At all.

The film starts off quite well and it wastes virtually no time in getting straight into the action with a zombie outbreak in downtown Philadelphia (these scenes were shot in Glasgow, believe it or not). Lane, his wife (Mireille Enos) and his two daughters get caught up in the middle of the widespread panic and looting but manage to escape to safety. Once his family are safely on board an aircraft carrier (because hes THAT important) Lane reluctantly agrees to take on a mission to get to the bottom of the outbreak, not only for the sake of his family, but for all mankind. He and his wife are both given satellite phones so they can stay in touch and he sets off on his quest. And this is where things start to fall apart. Pitts character simply jets from one place to another, finding vital clues, getting caught up in zombie attacks, managing to escape by the skin of his teeth and then heading on to the next destination where the action just repeats itself.

Director Marc Forster is unable to instill any sense of dread, tension or urgency into proceedings. The film just plods along from one poorly shot, badly edited, completely unengaging set piece to another. The CGI hordes of digital zombies are both unconvincing and unthreatening and if youve seen the trailer then youve seen virtually all the money shots.

The film has the rotten stench of studio interference all over it. It appears that a decision was made somewhere along the line to tone down the blood and gore in an effort to achieve a lower age rating so it could appeal to as wide an audience as possible and increase its chance of recouping its considerable costs. And this hurts the film greatly. Im not a gore hound by any means but this film, about a worldwide zombie epidemic, contains barely a single drop of blood. And as a result all sense of danger is removed. The film feels completely sanitized and it cheapens the whole affair. The zombies can run fast. They twitch and convulse and moan a lot. But theyre just not scary. Weve seen this kind of thing done too many times before, except bigger, better and scarier.

And then, about two-thirds of the way in to the film, you can almost tell the exact moment where the extensive reshoots kick in and it suddenly feels like a completely different film. But it doesnt get any better, unfortunately. And it ultimately builds to a thoroughly unsatisfying, saccharine ending which leaves things open for another installment, which I very much doubt well ever get.

All the characters are one-dimensional and uninteresting. Great actors like David Morse (The Green Mile) and Peter Capaldi (The Thick of It) are wasted in nothing roles. I even thought I spotted Matthew Fox (Lost) as a soldier at one point and had to check the IMDB to confirm it was actually him. The dialogue is forced and riddled with clichs. Many of the characters also make very silly choices at critical moments. In fact, there is one incredibly stupid moment involving an airplane and a grenade that I wont spoil here but it has to be seen to be believed.

Looking like he has stepped straight out of one of his Chanel No.5 adverts, even Pitt fails to convince. He just looks bored throughout and its very hard to care about the fate of his character or his family.

One cant help but feel that there is a much better film in here trying to get out. Its very telling that Pitt has chosen to do virtually no press or publicity for this movie, bar the odd soundbite at a red carpet premiere. That doesnt exactly inspire confidence, especially considering he helped to develop and produce the film as well as star in it.
Sorry Brad, but this is the Pitts. Avoid like the plague.

eh...

I was indifferent to it. I liked Pitt's role yet at the same time I at no point felt like he gave two craps about leaving his family. Hit and miss here.

I thought World War Z was two hours of non stop action and awesomeness. Much better than I expected after reading all the problems that were happening while trying to make the movie.

Definitely a fun, explosive entertaining film with a great performance from Pitt. I thought the ending was just fine and didn't ruin the entire film for me. I thought the cure that Pitt's character discovered was pretty clever and was something that I would like to see further developed in a sequel (if they

But yeah I was really excited to see this and it surpassed my expectations and then some. It's probably one of my favorite films this summer along with Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Iceman, Oblivion, and Before Midnight. Definitely wouldn't mind checking it out again.

I wanna know how much the studio paid you to praise this garbage movie lol. Can you even call this a zombie movie? Everything happened off screen. This movie might've had a shot if they had the balls to rate it R, no way this comes close to beating Man of Steel this week
