Strike Back below!
by: JoBlo Jul. 22, 2009

The gang over at IGN managed to nab the first look at the teaser trailer to Tim Burton's latest cinematic creation starring Johnny Depp and co-starring Danny Elfman's signature sound, entitled ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The film is a mix of real life and CGI, and didn't entirely bowl me over upon first glance, but let us know your thoughts below. The film co-stars Burton's baby-mama Helena Bonham Carter, alongside peeps like Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman ( ), Michael Sheen, Christopher Lee, Crispin Glover (nice!), Matt Lucas and Stephen Fry, and will open wide (and in 3D) on March 10th, 2010. What think you?

If you want a dark version of Alice...I suggest Neco z Alenky aka Alice by Jan Svankmajer, probably the best version Ive seen to date. Im very happy with what Ive seen of Burtons Alice so far, my only hesitation is Anne Hathaway - shes franky not much of an actress, although Ive not seen Rachel Getting Married as of yet.

...people thought Transformers 2 looked awesome when they saw the first footage. I love it when people complain about teasers - there's nothing to go on here, except a taste of the aesthetic. And blaming Burton for how Depp is being marketed in a film by Disney (who made I don't know how many billions of dollars using him in PotC) - pull your heads out of your asses.

Burton gets a project that is totally based in whimsy and applies his whimsical nature - and now we've got these haters whining about it. Sorry it's not tough or dark enough for you. Sorry it's Disney and not New Line.

Just go put on some black eyeliner and punch a baby - you'll feel better until Saw 9 comes out, or whatever film makes you feel cool about your taste in movies.

Why is everyone so fucking judgmental. Based off of the trailer I have to say that it looks pretty sick. Stop being so pretentious. Jesus Christ. And of course Depp is going to get the spotlight, who the hell else does are you going to give it to especially when it comes to a collaboration between Depp and Burton? Anne Hathaway?

This could be interesting
Gotta say, while I'm still slightly peeved this thing is being touted as a regular vehicle for Johnny Depp, it looks like Burton's really fund a way to make a completely new (and 3D-friendly) world, with all the shrunken bodies and such. And hey, Tim Burton always gets a free pass in my book just for being one of the most stubborn visionaries around.

Redundancy
Uh , yeah , Depp sounds like Jack Sparrow on prozac .

Jim Carrey's Riddler is coming to mind also with a pinch of Tlj's Two Face .

Or is he auditioning for the possibility of playing the Joker in the next Bboy film . Was that over the top , i can never tell :).

My only prob is , Depp has retired into this groove where his repetoire has grown stale , he seems as if he's playin the same character in every movie now , with slight variations , but now he appears to have committed the cardinal sin of the character actor's oath , thou shalt not be given to thespian repetition .

The movie looks about as good as i could imagine , this is to Burton as Transformers is to Bay , a perfect marriage of director ( and their theatrical sensibilities), their artistic instincts and source material . Looking forward to it , too bad Depp is a distraction now instead of an asset .

Looks pretty awesome, but all I have to say is that it seems like they're giving Johnny Depp WAY too big of a part. No one else even gets a billing in the trailer. It's called Alice in Wonderland, not the Zany Adventures of the Mad Hatter.

Interesting that there was barely any footage of, you know, the title character. Nothing against Depp, but come on, the film can't sell without his presence? Weak, Burton.

I am no spammer or one of those people that hate on a movie before its release but this trailer was not right. It was to anticipate the Mad Hatter whom, by the way, sounded like Jack Sparrow (take in mind just this trailer did...it could work better next time). I did enjoy the visuals. Big Fish is still my favorite and the visual style reminds me of it but not stoked but I will see it. And...

I was falling in love with this film when I saw the released photos ... but now I'm not so sure. Like YoshioKun13 said, it's quite overwhelming. Too much going on ... all in all, it's not a well-cut trailer.

I dunno ... I'll reserve judgment, but it's not looking great at this point.

Lots of CGI
It's kind of overwhelming, but hey I guess that's the norm in movies nowadays and I should just accept it. They clearly wanted to showcase Depp as the Hatter mainly, but other than that it's too early to judge.

Gotta agree with the over reliance on CGI. I mean if you look back to the Netherworld in Beetlejuice, it's almost as visually crazy and imaginative as Wonderland looks here, but infinitely more real because it was done practically, save for maybe a few optical effects.

looks Great
For one this film looks great and looks like its set to return Burton back to his roots or weirdness and originality. Depp looks crazy as hell and looks like he has a bigger role than the original Hatter did. Also I'm glad he doesn't sound like every other character he's played for Burton. (Ed Wood & Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

I love his Art Director and the way Burton's films look, but dislike his direction. He seems to miss the point in everything he adapts, and from the looks of the trailer, this movie should be called Mad Hatter In Wonderland (much like how Batman should have been called Joker). The focus is in the wrong place. That could just be the way the trailer's cut... but history tells me otherwise... Hatter will be a major character throughout. Really, Burton could have just cast Depp as Alice and saved himself the trouble... :/

I was extremely exited when this picture was announced, but now I'm bored. I wanted to see an Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp as a supporting character, but this trailer makes it look like its centered around him. To much.

I'll probably still check the film out, but it's went from me in line opening night to just a casual theater trip.

Terrible
I'm sick of Tim Burton. I can;t say that I really like any single one of his flicks. I wish he'd stop and I wish Johnny Depp would find a new friend. Cameron maybe? Snyder? hmmm...

Passing. Doesn't look that good to me. I know it is just a teaser, but meh. Not a Burton fan

I liked it...
I loved the animated movie when I was a kid, and this looks like a great breathing of life into it, so to speak, especially in the opening... I just hope they keep all the crabs or lobsters, and don't try top focus it too much around depp-- His character is not in the majority of the movie, and altering such a perfect, classic story, is unneccessary, especially to cater to preteen girls....

Alice in Crapland?
Let's say I'm not convinced. This looks like a typic Burton movie, but with idiotic computercrazyness working in overdrive. On the other hand Depp is ... dunno. Don't like it.

Some people say Jim Carrey was the same as 'The Grinch', 'Count Olaf' and 'Scrooge'. But what about Depp!? I mean, c'mon, I love the guy ... but after 'Willy Wonka', 'Jack Sparrow', 'Sweeney Todd' and...

I mean, c'mon, I love the guy ... but after 'Willy Wonka', 'Jack Sparrow', 'Sweeney Todd' and this I have the feeling I see right through him, he's becoming very predictable. And if you take away the make-up there would be little difference between any of those characters.

Maybe I'm tired of the Burton/Depp combination.

Funny, I strongly felt that he played Wonka no different than Jim Carrey would have done.

nothing spectacular
I think it looks like a Tim Burton adaptation of a classic of Western culture. Whether or not it is good is an entirely different matter. Personally I don't think his track record of adapting previously made stories is that great. Planet of the Apes & Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were completely unnecessary and nowhere nearly as good as the originals; whereas, Sleepy Hollow was incredible...

Johnny Depp looks awesome as usual, but I'm still not convinced that this is going to be anything that wins me over.

I really am getting sick of this 3D films. Every BIG movie coming out HAS to be in 3D. Which means ad 5 dollars more for stupid glasses and the annoyance of wearing them. Enough!
