Godzilla: King of the Monsters director teases connection to ’54 original

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Not gonna lie, I was pretty lukewarm on the 2014 GODZILLA remake that’s now the lynchpin to the Giant Monsterverse (too dour and not enough Bryan Cranston). However, I am super looking forward to the upcoming sequel KING OF THE MONSTERS, not the least of which is the involvement of director Mike Dougherty, who worked on the awesome films TRICK ‘R TREAT and KRAMPUS (the fact that fan-favorites Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah are all going to be involved doesn’t hurt either).

Anyway, speaking of Dougherty, he sent a cryptic tweet this morning showing this device:

For those aware of GODZILLA lore, this is the Oxygen Destroyer from the 1954 film. It was created by Dr. Serizawa – who defies genre convention by being a scientist with an eye=patch who is not the villain – and it was a machine that removes oxygen from whatever body of water it is placed in and was used to destroy Godzilla in in the original film. In fact, Ken Watanabe plays a character named Dr. Serizawa in the new series of films, so it is possible he could take that role in the new films? If so, I’m down to see Watanabe rock a badass eye-patch. Either way, is this going to be something they’re going to try on use on Godzilla, or possibly as the end game to stop Ghidorah? I guess only time will tell.

Meanwhile, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will stomp into theaters March 22nd, 2019.
