As HBO's swords and sorcery epic GAME OF THRONES prepares for its final season, it's time for Peter Dinklage to start thinking about the future, and decide where he'd like to go next in the wide world of Hollywood. Today, according to an exclusive report by Variety, Dinklage has attached himself to an upcoming film adaptation of the classic fairytale RUMPELSTILTSKIN for Sony. In addition to starring as the trickster imp of the Brothers Grimm cautionary tale, Dinklage will also produce.
Set to pen the script for RUMPELSTILTSKIN are Patrick Ness (A MONSTER CALLS, CHAOS WALKING) and Karen Rosenfelt (THE TWILIGHT SAGA). Joining Dinklage on his producing efforts are Circle of Confusion’s Matt Smith and David Alpert, David Ginsberg, and Josh Weinstock.
For the moment, the film is still in its early-development stage, and it's unlikely that this will be Dinklage's next project after the curtain comes to a close for GAME OF THRONES. While plot details are scarce at this time, the film will no doubt be a re-imagining of the classic story collected by The Brothers Grimm.
According to the lore, the frightening tale of Rumpelstiltskin begins with a miller who lies to his king, telling him that his daughter can spin straw into gold. Intrigued by the maiden's unique gift, the king calls for her to be brought to his castle, where he locks her away in a small tower room filled with straw and a spinning wheel. With a harsh tongue, the kings warns that if the girl does not spin the straw into gold by daybreak, he'll remove her head from her shoulders. In the midst of her desperation, the girl is visited by an imp-like creature, who offers to transform the straw into gold for the prince of a necklace draped around her neck. As the story continues, the king makes more demands of the young woman, thus forcing her into a terrible give-and-take with the mysterious imp.
No information as to when the film will take place has been given at this time. Will it be presented in modern times, or perhaps be framed as a call-back to the days when magical shenanigans were a dime-a-dozen? Your guess is as good as mine, for the moment Personally, I think Dinklage could knock this role out of the park, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the effects crew designs his character's makeup.
