WWII drama The Zookeeper’s Wife starring Jessica Chastain releases trailer

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Ever since I saw Jessica Chastain's amazing performance in ZERO DARK THIRTY, I've always kept an eye for any project she'd show up in. While not all of her films have necessarily hit it out of the park, she always does. From INTERSTELLAR, to CRIMSON PEAK, to MAMA, she always seems to give it her all (even giviving a fun performance in the dismal THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR). So I'm excited to see what she does in her new WWII drama THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE, which is based on a harrowing and inspiring true story.

Here's the trailer:

Looks great! And with the rash of hate crimes (ironically many of them involving Nazi imagery) that have risen up since the election, it is important to see films that show us we can make it out on the other side, no matter how dark things may get. And, almost as importantly, that those with priveledge or the means to protect those in need do what they can to help, even if it's difficult. Let's just hope the film lives up to this stylish and beautiful trailer.

Here's the official synopsis:

The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are stunned – and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.
