Now this is absolutely the coolest marketing ploy of the J.J. Abrams STAR TREK era. With STAR TREK, William Shatner voiced his feelings of being slighted at not being included in the same way Leonard Nimoy was. Chris Pine took over the role of Kirk and Shatner was nowhere to be seen. Well, it looks like he has gotten over his sour feelings enough to film this great commercial for the STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS tie-in video game.

Playing of the classic original series episode “Arena” which featured the iconic battle with the lizard alien Gorn. This commercial brings the two back in their golden years to rematch. Check out the commercial.

The video game takes place between STAR TREK and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and features an entirely original story to bridge the two films. Here’s a synopsis:

The highly anticipated STAR TREK: THE VIDEO GAME features a vastly updated version of the Gorn as the key foe to legendary duo Kirk and Spock. Players take on the roles of Kirk and Spock, who work together to get to the heart of a mysterious attack by an enemy with unimaginable strength – a re-imagined version of the Gorn. In an entirely original story, written by BAFTA award winner Marianne Krawczyk, the Gorn is a terrifying threat, with an army that could overwhelm Kirk, Spock and the crew of the Enterprise.

I am very excited to play the game, which will be on all consoles as well as PC. STAR TREK: THE VIDEO GAME hits stores on April 23, 2013 and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens in theaters on May 17, 2013.

And for fun, here is the classic Kirk versus Gorn battle.
