Guillermo Del Toro saddened movie fans a couple of months ago when he said that his H.P. Lovecraft movie AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS was dead. Well, that may not be entirely true.
Del Toro said back in May that “I assumed the greek metaphor [of the title] alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -if not the demise- of ATMOM.”
I will try to explain the similarities as vaguely as possible to avoid spoilers: Both PROMETHEUS and AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS deal with scientists discovering symbols that lead them to a barren land where they encounter otherworldly beings that may herald the end of humanity as we know it.
At Comic Con, Del Toro divulged that he still has not seen PROMETHEUS yet. “When I’m brave enough to go and see ‘Prometheus,’ I’ll know. But for now, I don’t know,” he said. “We are all nothing but human beings. I go to the theatre, I buy my ticket for Prometheus and I go and see something else, because I’m afraid. I’m not a mental entity, I am also emotional, because the ideas are similar, from what I’ve heard and I’ll see it next week, I promise!”
We all know Del Toro has dozens of projects in various states of development, so even this news does not mean much for AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, but it is something! If PACIFIC RIM is as huge as it seems, Del Toro may get a free pass to make whatever he wants. Maybe this will be it.
