After years of development, MONEYBALL director Bennett Miller is finally getting traction on his drama FOXCATCHER, about John du Pont – heir to the du Pont chemical fortune – and his infamous murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz. In a perhaps brilliant piece of casting, Du Pont will be played by Steve Carell. And as for Schultz, LA Times’ 24 Frames reports that he will be portrayed by Channing Tatum.
The fascinating story captures the moment where Du Pont, “in an apparent fit of paranoid schizophrenia, infamously shot and killed the Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz in 1996 at a Pennsylvania facility du Pont had built (the titular Foxcatcher). He was jailed for the crime, and died in prison in 2010.” Schultz, a family man who was killed at the age of 36, was a seven-time world and Olympic champion wrestler. While Tatum obviously has the physicality to embody the part, will his acting game also be up to snuff?
FOXCATCHER has yet to officially receive a green light, so a start date is still not on the table. The film will come from ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND producer Anthony Bregman and CAPOTE writers E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman.
