Disney pushing ahead with Pixar-less Cars spin-off, Planes

Well this is weird.

I just got a press release from “DisneyToon Studio” announcing that in anticipation of the massive success of CARS 2 (like it won’t make tons of money, please), that they’re pushing ahead with a spin-off of the franchise, PLANES.

Now, the strange part is, Pixar apparently has nothing to do with this, and is nary a mention of them in the entire announcement. Rather, Disney animation is shouldering this completely on their own, and will release PLANES will on Blu-ray and DVD in Spring 2013. Here’s the concept:

PLANES takes off with an international cast of the fastest air racers around, in a comedy packed with action and adventure starring Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race … despite his fear of heights. With the help and support of a fleet of new and hilarious characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life.

A plane that’s afraid of heights? TOO F***ING ADORABLE! But seriously, this sounds like a terrible idea, especially if Pixar isn’t involved. Naturally, this will not stop it from raking in insane amounts of cash I’m sure.
