I’m still conflicted about the playful tone of the ensemble action flick RED, but I’m warming to it. The sight of regal Oscar-winner Helen Mirren on the Ma Deuce can do that.
The movie is (loosely) based on a Warren Ellis espionage comic miniseries, and involves a retired CIA agent who gets flagged for elimination thanks to the government secrets in his hairless cranium. The movie adds in a group of fellow former operatives who help him out.

RED comes from director Robert Schwentke (FLIGHTPLAN, THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE) and also features Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfuss, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Ernest Borgnine, Julian McMahon and Mary-Louise Parker.
