If you were excited by the description of the footage from the adaptation of Stephen King's THE DARK TOWER saga that was shown at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas earlier this week, you're going to have to hold on to that excitement for a little while longer, because Sony Pictures has just delayed the release of the film. This is the second time THE DARK TOWER has been pushed out of a release date; the long-awaited adaptation was originally scheduled for release on February 17, 2017, but was then pushed back to July 28th. Thankfully, the delay this time around isn't nearly as bad – THE DARK TOWER has just been pushed back one week, to August 4th.
Sony had intended to release the animated THE EMOJI MOVIE on August 4th, but that film is now taking over the July 28th slot. EMOJI and TOWER are trading dates so the animated film will have an extra week to draw in young viewers during their summer break.
Directed by Nikolaj Arcel from a screenplay he wrote with Anders Thomas Jensen, Akiva Goldsman, and Jeff Pinkner, THE DARK TOWER is said to be a sequel of sorts to King's literary series.
THE DARK TOWER will follow a wandering knight who is the last hope of the fallen land of Mid-World. He is charged with finding the Dark Tower while battling his nemesis the Man in Black.
Idris Elba plays that "wandering knight", gunslinger Roland Deschain, with Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black. They are joined in the cast by Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, a young boy who has "The Shine"; Fran Kranz as the Man in Black's right hand man Pimli; Jackie Earle Haley as vampire leader Sayre; Katheryn Winnick in a mystery role; and Abbey Lee as Tirana, who was a minor villain in the final book.
We're just over four months away from the release of the film now, and Sony has informed Entertainment Weekly that a trailer release is imminent.
