Kong: Skull Island officially not a sequel, but beginning of kaiju trilogy

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

The production of KONG: SKULL ISLAND is as shrouded in mist as the island itself, but publicist Gregg Brilliant has offered a small amount of clarity, however obvious it might be: SKULL ISLAND is "definitely" not a sequel to Peter Jackson's 2005 epic KING KONG.

Rather, it's the first in a trilogy including the upcoming GODZILLA 2 (June 8, 2018) and GODZILLA VS. KONG (2020). Obviously if they find themselves raking in HUNGER GAMES numbers, it won't end there. It might not be a lot of news to go on, but it's good to have confirmation that this KONG is solidly carving its own path, much like 2014's GODZILLA before it. Maybe they can find a creative new way of presenting the story rather than remaining trapped by Peter Jackson's mythology.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND:

is about a man who travels to the mythical island and home of the king of the apes. A team of explorers ventures inside what they find to be a treacherous island. The story is said to honor the King Kong lore but in a different time period.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Tom Wilkinson, Thomas Mann, John Ortiz, and Shea Whigham. Will Brittain, Corey Hawkins, and Jason Mitchell will also appear, as a team of pilots. Look for the film in theaters on March 10, 2017.
