After months and months of speculative hearsay, some real light has finally been shed on Fox and Ridley Scott’s long-gestating ALIEN prequel!
According to Deadline, the film has morphed from a mere alien prequel to something different and “more original.” The project is now officially titled PROMETHEUS, and retains Scott as director in his first sci-fi effort since BLADE RUNNER in 1982.
Not only that, word is Noomi Rapace (as long rumored) has legitimately signed onto play the tough young heroine, Elizabeth Shaw. Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are said to be vying for the role of Vickers, the other primary female lead in the film.
Scott and Damon Lindelof (“Lost” STAR TREK) have retooled the initial script by Jon Spaihts (THE DARKEST HOUR), expanding what was a basic origin story into something more complex and diverse. In terms of story, here’s what the trade was able to mine:
“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”
F*ckin’-A, that sounds pretty damn awesome! I for one am glad Ridley and friends aren’t simply looking to recapture the past, but use it as a tool to tell a more evolved, unique story. Who’s with me?!?
PROMETHEUS is already slated for a March 9th, 2012 worldwide release!
