Looks like Big Willy is still torn!
Last week we told y’all that all lights were green for Barry Sonnenfeld’s MEN IN BLACK 3D, even having original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones on board to reprise their roles as Agents Jay and Kay. Well, Entertainment Weekly is now reporting that Smith is still vacillating between doing MIB 3D for Sony and THE CITY THAT SAILED for Fox, and that neither project has emerged as a favorite. Okay then…
While Smith is reportedly “leaning toward” returning to the black suit and shades, nothing official has been set in stone. Furthermore, Sony is still weighing the decision to bring a third MEN IN BLACK film in 3D or not. But c’mon, given the current craze for the format, I’m willing to bet they opt in favor of!
David Koepp (PANIC ROOM, STIR OF ECHOES) has been ushered in to burnish Etan Cohen’s new screenplay for MIB 3D.
A pretty interesting dilemma for the most bankable star in the world, ay? If the dude needed any more doe, I’d say the easy choice would be to do a third MIB flick. It’s proven, family friendly, and with the addition of 3D, it could really do well. On the other hand, THE CITY THAT SAILED would reunite Smith with his I AM LEGEND director Lawrence Franics (from a script by Andrew Niccol), and as I’m sure you know, that movie was hardly a bomb. In fact, it was one of the highest grossing pictures of Big Willy’s career.
Either way, it’s seems a decision that boils down to art vs. commerce. Does Will wanna stretch his acting chops in a potentially less commercial film, or return to what he knows is a cash cow, acting in a familiar manner that doesn’t really challenge him as a performer? This folks, seems to be the quandary.
So what do you think Smith will do? What do you think he should do?
MIB 2’s Rosario Dawson!
