I must admit that I am more than
torn about this latest news regarding the remake of the 1980 slasher
PROM NIGHT. Torn because I still have yet to decide whether this is
two pieces of bad news, or one of each.
Fangoria went on set of the remake and
spoke with director Nelson McCormick. McCormick had a few
things to say, and it’s those comments that have me in a tizzy. (Jeez! Tizzy?
Apparently now I’m a 80 year old lady)
The aspect that I know that I’m
disappointed in is about the film being rated PG-13. It’s not that I require an
‘R’ rating to enjoy something, but when I hear things like
“There were times when we thought, ‘That shot is more R
than PG-13,’ so we would go with less blood,” admits McCormick.” it sort
of bums me out. I mean their gauging the filming on the rating, as opposed to
making the movie and than having it rated. This to me seems like it would take
away from any sort of artistic freedom.
Now the part that I’m not too sure
whether is good news or bad is when McCormick told Fango:
“The resemblance is name-only. I saw the original in 1980
and I was kind of relieved to hear that this is a different take. This is my
first feature film, so it’s all or nothing, and you’ll see elements of movies
like SEVEN and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS in this.”
So they’ve decided to take the film
the route of a psychological thriller? I mean that could easily be pulled off in
a PG-13 scenario, and at least their not trying to redo the original frame for
frame or anything. Maybe a
PROM NIGHT psychological thriller could
work as opposed to another slasher. What are your thoughts on this? Let me
