Volker Bertelmann, an Oscar-winning composer, has been tapped to score Clayface for DC Studios. He’s known for his frequent collaborations with Edward Berger and won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for All Quiet on the Western Front. You may have also heard his work on The Old Guard, Ammonite, Conclave, Ballad of a Small Player, A House of Dynamite, Dune: Prophecy, and more.

All About Clayface

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has described the movie as a “complete horror film.” The film has been directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) from a script by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen) stars alongside Naomi Ackie (No Time to Die) and Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale).

The first teaser trailer for Clayface premiered at CinemaCon.The main character, Matt Hagen (Rhys Harries) lays in a hospital bed with a bandaged, bloody face. After being attacked, he has mysterious chemicals pumped into him, and we see his face change. In the final moments, he’s sitting in a bathtub and wipes away his entire face. Creepy.

I’m excited for this one. It feels so completely different from Superman and the upcoming Supergirl, and that’s a good thing. From the beginning, Gunn wanted the DC Universe to experiment with different genres, and Clayface looks to be the first significant departure from what we’ve already seen.

Last year, Gunn explained that he never intended on making a Clayface movie in the DC Universe, but the original script from horror maestro Mike Flanagan was just too good to ignore. “I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie. Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie,’” Gunn said. “But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work. He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.” This one is slated for a October 23 release.
