What do you do to relieve stress? I typically listen to music, play video games, or go for a walk. Consider this a friendly reminder to slow down, close your eyes, take a deep breath in through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. There. Now, like Russell Crowe’s character in The Get Out, you’re ready to watch the trailer for Derrick Borte‘s new crime comedy.
What happens in The Get Out trailer?
Directed by Derrick Borte, based on a script he wrote with Daniel Forte, The Get Out finds Crowe playing a crime boss who, after a cardiac event, is told that if he doesn’t get his anger management and stress under control, he could be sleeping with the fishes, see? In an attempt to follow his doctor’s advice, he decides to sell his nightclub and reduce his involvement in the criminal world. However, there are plenty of people who won’t let him go quietly, including a couple who make the most significant mistake of their lives.
What’s The Get Out about?
Here’s the official synopsis for The Get Out, courtesy of Vertical:
“A nightclub owner (Russell Crowe) is on the verge of leaving his dangerous past behind for retirement with his girlfriend (Teresa Palmer). When masked gunmen (Nina Dobrev, Aaron Paul) rob him, and he finds himself squeezed by ruthless cartels, a mysterious newcomer (Luke Evans) arrives with an interest in buying the business. With danger closing in from all sides, he must navigate a deadly web of deception, power, and survival – where escape may no longer be an option.”
Crowe and Borte reassemble
The Get Out, starring Russell Crowe, Luke Evans, Teresa Palmer, Nina Dobrev, and Aaron Paul, is another movie pairing Crowe and Borte after the 2020 psychological thriller Unhinged (read our review here). In Unhinged, Crowe plays a man with unprecedented road rage who, after a confrontation with a random woman, won’t stop chasing her until the pursuit reaches a deadly conclusion.
While Unhinged didn’t land on my radar, I’m digging the trailer for The Get Out. The cast includes plenty of actors I enjoy watching, and it’s got a fair amount of humor mixed in with crime shenanigans and firefights. That sounds like a winning combination. Although, if I may, it’s a little strange that they chose the title The Get Out after there’s already a movie called Get Out from Jordan Peele, and it’s a classic. The title is bound to cause some confusion with folks who don’t have their finger on the pulse, and I can think of at least three other titles that would have been more fitting. Not the end of the world, just bizarre.
Get Out opens in select theaters on June 26, then becomes available on digital and On Demand on June 30.
