It’s been over a decade since the release of It Follows, David Robert Mitchell’s acclaimed horror film, but the sequel is finally set to begin. Maika Monroe will reprise her role of Jay from the original, and Deadline reports that Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) is in final talks to join her in They Follow.

They Follow

Plot details on They Follow are being kept under wraps, only that it will take place a decade after the events of the original film. It’s not known who Ackie will play in the sequel.

Mitchell will once again direct from a script he wrote and will also produce alongside Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, as well as original It Follows producers David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith. Production is looking at kicking off this summer.

The original film followed Jay (Monroe), “a college student who, after a sexual encounter, becomes the target of an unstoppable supernatural entity. As the entity takes the form of random people, slowly but relentlessly stalking her and her friends through the Detroit area, she grapples with the fact that she will only be able to escape the curse she has inherited by passing it on to someone else through sex.

Late last year, Monroe teased the “incredible” script for the sequel. “I was sent the script and I thought it was incredible. It’s also very different from the original,” she said. “I felt the original was a litle more heightened and dramatic, and this I think is really quite grounded. (The sequel) follows the story of these two women that are just mentally dealing with a lot. I thought it was a really interesting take on it. Fingers crossed it happens, next year is the rumor.

Naomi Ackie

Ackie can currently be seen starring alongside Keke Palmer and Taylour Paige in I Love Boosters, the latest film from writer/director Boots Riley. It follows a group of shoplifters who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven by stealing her clothes and reselling them at a lower price. She’s also set to star in Clayface from DC Studios, which will be released on October 23.
