Wait. What? According to a new rumor from industry leaker Jeff Sneider, Sebastian Stan is playing Victor Zsasz in Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II. Sneider’s report comes after months of speculation that Stan would play Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face) in the long-gestating sequel, with Scarlett Johansson playing Harvey’s wife, Gilda Dent, and Charles Dance playing Harvey’s father, Christopher Dent. Is another actor playing Harvey Dent? Is Two-Face even in this movie? Victor Zsasz? What the hell is going on here?
So, who’s actually playing Harvey Dent?
Well, according to Sneider, Brian Tyree Henry is actually the one playing Harvey Dent! Fascinating! I do enjoy Henry a great deal, and I must say, having him step into the dual-personality District Attorney role is far more interesting than having Stan play the character. Again, this is all speculation and rumor, so before you start clacking away, it might be best to wait for more details.
Does Victor Zsasz make sense?
Early reports about The Batman: Part II said the film would feature a villain who had not appeared in a film before, and Zsasz fits that bill. Anthony Carrigan played Victor Zsasz in the Batman: Arkham video game franchise, and reprised the role for the live-action television series Gotham, but that hardly counts. Alex Morf played the character in the Arrowverse series Batwoman, while Tim Booth played Zsasz in Batman Begins, though it was a “blink and you’ll miss it” appearance.
Who is Victor Zsasz?
Victor Zsasz is a twisted bastard who’s notoriously difficult to catch. As a serial killer, his pattern is irradic, other than that he poses the corpses of his victims in lifelike poses. Zsasz carves a tally mark in his skin for each person he kills, like days spent in isolation carved into a wall. He believes that life is little more than a cycle of pain and disappointment, and that by killing his victims, he’s rescuing them from a life of mediocrity and torture.
The jury is still deliberating
After thinking about it for a few minutes, Victor Zsasz, while not the most interesting Batman villain, lines up with The Batman‘s grounded approach to the Dark Knight. Should he be the primary antagonist? I don’t know. Many people would not be cool with that, but I trust Reeves to have more than a few great ideas up his sleeve. I enjoyed The Batman a heck of a lot, and adding Zsasz to the mix is a bold choice. I’d rather the creative team shoot for the moon with something unexpected than give us another Harvey Dent story.
