Supergirl is now playing in theaters, but unfortunately, the latest DCU movie is unlikely to become a box office blockbuster; in fact, the film could lose Warner Bros. up to $125 million.
Supergirl at the Box Office
Supergirl has grossed just $62 million worldwide so far, lower than the opening of The Marvels, another notorious bomb. Warner Bros. and DC Studios spent roughly $170 million to produce the movie and another $120 million on marketing. To break even, the film would need to gross between $300 million and $375 million, but current projections indicate it will barely reach $200 million worldwide.
Sources tell Variety that Supergirl could ultimately lose the studio somewhere between $100 million and $125 million, although other insiders believe the losses will be closer to $80 million to $85 million. Either way you slice it, the film will likely be a money loser in theaters.
Supergirl will also be facing some stiff competition in the coming weeks, with Minions & Monsters opening on July 1, followed by Moana on July 10, The Odyssey on July 17, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31.
Supergirl
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic series written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. After her father is murdered and the one responsible is still out there, a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll seeks out Supergirl to help her on a vicious mission. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost.
Supergirl stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, alongside Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) as Krem of the Yellow Hill, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) as Zor-El, Emily Beecham (1899) as Alura, and Jason Momoa as Lobo, a role he has longed to play for years.
