Christopher Landon to direct The Final Girl Support Group

Deadline reports that Christopher Landon has been tapped to write and direct The Final Girl Support Group, a feature film based on Grady Hendrix‘s novel of the same name.

Initially Developed as a TV Series

You might recall that The Final Girl Support Group was initially set up as a TV series on HBO Max. Andy and Barbara Muschietti were on board as producers—with Andy directing the pilot—alongside Charlize Theron through her Denver and Delilah Films banner.

The report states that Theron is no longer attached, but the Muschietti’s are still involved. They will produce under their Double Dream label alongside Adam Goldworm for Aperture Entertainment. Hendrix will serve as an executive producer on the film.

What is The Final Girl Support Group About?

Billed as a “fast-paced, frightening, and wickedly humorous thriller,” the story pays tribute to classic horror movies such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream. The novel follows Lynnette Tarkington, a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. “For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable and working to put their lives back together,” reads the official synopsis. “Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece. But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.“

Landon has a lot of experience in the realm of horror. He wrote and produced five installments of the Paranormal Activity franchise, including taking the helm of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

He also wrote and directed Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U, and co-wrote and directed Freaky, a body-swapping slasher comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton.

Fans have been demanding a third installment of the Happy Death Day franchise, and after many delays, it finally seems to be moving forward.
