Just when it felt like Grand Theft Auto VI hype couldn’t possibly get higher, Netflix’s exclusive first look went and shattered the ceiling. According to new data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, total U.S. app downloads for Netflix increased by 24% compared to the previous day. Downloads that day were also 20% higher compared to the average daily downloads registered in the prior 30 days. Wow!
The majority of downloads occurred on Apple devices, with Netflix app downloads on iOS increasing by 54% compared to the previous day. As of this morning, the first-look footage was the third most-watched movie on the streamer, even though it’s available on YouTube.
Pre-Orders Surge to Astronomical Heights
Was inking a deal with Netflix worth it for Rockstar? You bet. According to the numbers, pre-orders for GTA VI skyrocketed by 436% compared to the previous day, with PlayStation pre-orders surging by 606% and Xbox up by 127%. By Friday, once the footage was available on both Netflix and YouTube, total pre-orders were up 572% compared to the prior 30-day average.
Welcome to Leonida: Vice City, High-Stakes Heists, and Pure Chaos
Set in a sun-drenched, neon-soaked parody of modern Florida (dubbed the state of Leonida), Grand Theft Auto VI locks into the ride-or-die dynamic of Lucia and Jason, a criminal duo operating with pure Bonnie and Clyde energy. When an ambitious heist blows up in their faces, the pair gets dragged into a massive state-wide conspiracy, forcing them to hustle through everything from the slick, gleaming avenues of Vice City to the murky, gator-infested backwaters of the Everglades. At its heart, it’s a story about trust, survival, and high-stakes crime, all wrapped in a blistering satire of modern 2020s social media brain rot, viral influencer culture, and top-tier American absurdity.
A Record-Breaking Release on the Horizon
Grand Theft Auto VI is, without question, the most anticipated game in history. Rockstar stands to make a mint when the game finally releases on November 19, 2026, solely based on the game’s single-player experience. Rockstar will inevitably cash in again when GTA VI goes online, though details about the studio’s new version of GTA Online remain under wraps.
My Take: Why I’m Ready to Lock-and-Load on Day One
I eagerly watched Netflix’s Grand Theft Auto VI presentation the minute it launched, and even though I didn’t see anything revelatory, my excitement to play the game has only increased. While the gameplay looks similar to other installments of the franchise, the world dynamics are incredibly impressive, and I’m already invested in Jason and Lucia’s story. I haven’t pre-ordered it yet, but as soon as my next paycheck clears, I’ll snag a copy of the deluxe edition without hesitation.
