According to Deadline, DC Studios is in the very early stages of developing a John Constantine movie and has tapped Francis Galluppi (Evil Dead Wrath) to write the script. I can’t imagine this bodes well for Keanu Reeves’ Constantine sequel…
John Constantine
DC declined to comment, but it indicates that the studio isn’t done with the horror side of the DCU after the release of Clayface. That film has received largely positive reviews and has grossed over $90 million worldwide since its release last month.
Created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben, John Constantine is a working-class British detective with expertise in magic and the occult and a penchant for the grift. He made his first appearance in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985
Keanu Reeves played the character in the 2005 Constantine movie, which grossed a respectable $230.9 million on a $70-100 million budget. The movie found Constantine helping an LAPD detective (Rachel Weisz) prove that her sister’s death wasn’t a suicide but was, in fact, something much more sinister. Afterwards, Matt Ryan played Constantine in a short-lived TV series before joining the Arrowverse with appearances in Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.
What About the Keanu Reeves Sequel?
Keanu Reeves has been trying to get a proper Constantine sequel going for many years, even pitching the concept to DC Studios last year. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed he had met with Reeves about the project.
“I’ve discussed it on and off. I discussed it with Keanu,” he said. “So, yeah, I mean, that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented, but I have not read any script yet, so…“
I would imagine this new John Constantine project will be a fresh take, but until I hear otherwise, I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that Reeves can somehow return.
Evil Dead Wrath
The buzz surrounding Evil Dead Wrath has been quite positive, with the film taking place in 1972, before the events of Sam Raimi’s original movie. Galluppi directed the movie from a script he wrote.
It will be released on April 7, 2027.
Do you hope this new John Constantine movie is a fresh take or do you want Keanu Reeves involved?
