Scream Factory pushes release of Event Horizon Blu-ray into 2021

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Scream Factory recently announced that they will be giving director Paul W.S. Anderson's sci-fi horror cult classic EVENT HORIZON (watch it HERE) a Collector's Edition Blu-ray release, and when they made that announcement the release date was September 29, 2020. For unspecified reasons, the release has now been pushed back to January 5, 2021.

The Scream Factory website says the delay is "due to current events", which could imply that it's taking longer to manufacture the package during the pandemic. But some fans are speculating that the three and a half month delay could have something to do with the "additional footage" the company had been looking for. The hope is that they've found the footage and need extra time to get it onto the Blu-ray.

The additional footage would come from the 130 minute cut of the film that was shown at a test screening, before the movie was quickly cut down to 96 minutes for its theatrical release. That cut was done so fast (in just a week) that Anderson feels the movie ended up being "too short" and didn't reach its full potential. (You can read more about the rushed edit and lost deleted scenes HERE.)

Will a longer cut be included on the Scream Factory release, or is this delay entirely due to the pandemic? We'll have to wait and see.

Scripted by Philip Eisner, EVENT HORIZON stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, Richard T. Jones, Jack Noseworthy, Jason Isaacs, and Sean Pertwee. The synopsis:

The year is 2047. Years earlier, the pioneering research vessel Event Horizon vanished without a trace. Now a signal from it has been detected, and the United States Aerospace Command responds. Hurtling toward the signal’s source are a fearless captain, his elite crew and the lost ship’s designer. Their mission: find and salvage the state-of-the-art spacecraft. What they find is state-of-the-art interstellar terror.

Scream Factory has not revealed what the special features in the Collector's Edition will be, but copies can be pre-ordered directly from the company or on Amazon.
