Adam Driver musical Annette debuts first trailer, sets Cannes premiere

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Holy Motors’ director Leos Carax makes his English-language debut with Annette, a trippy-musical starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, that Deadline is reporting has just set a premiere date at Cannes! Set for a domestic release later this summer via Amazon, the film’s first trailer dropped today to coincide with the Cannes news, and wow – does it ever look crazy.

According to Deadline, “set in contemporary Los Angeles, Annette tells the story of Henry, a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor and Ann, a singer of international renown. In the spotlight, they are the perfect couple, healthy, happy, and glamourous. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious girl with an exceptional destiny, will change their lives.”

Notably, the film was tipped to debut at last year’s Cannes, which of course never happened due to COVID-19. Interestingly, the film is a long-gestating passion project of the rock duo Sparks. They’re getting their own long-awaited feature documentary this summer from director Edgar Wright and Focus Features. I actually caught The Sparks Brothers at Sundance and loved it. In fact, I’ve been listening to Sparks music ever since, so I can’t wait to see their musical hit the big screen with some patented Leos Carax imagery.

Annette makes its Cannes debut during the postponed fest, which happened July 6-17.
