Bad Dreams (1988) Richard Lynch, Jennifer Rubin – (The Black Sheep)

A Nightmare On Elm Street was a giant hit that made Mr. Krueger one of the most important pop culture figures of the 1980s. The film itself spawned many sequels and many copy-cats, and one such film that gets unfairly grouped in with these and always tops the list is 1988's Bad Dreams (WATCH IT HEREOWN IT HERE). Directed by Andrew Fleming, who did the 90s genre favorite The Craft, Bad Dreams was compared to A Nightmare On Elm Street 3, which tanked the film at the box office and turned off critics and genre fans alike.

With our current trend of Cult themed movies becoming fan and critic favorites (look at The Lodge or Midsommar), Bad Dreams is due for a re-evaluation. This slasher aims to be a more mature and emotional take on the subgenre while still keeping up with unique and gory kills. Richard Lynch steals the show as the Jim Jones-Esq cult leader, while Dream Warriors Jennifer Rubin gives a career performance best. It isn't a perfect movie but it has aged a lot better than some of the Nightmare sequels and aims a bit higher than its other contemporaries.

Bad Dreams has the following synopsis:

The lone survivor of a suicide cult wakes from a thirteen-year coma in a psychiatric ward, where other patients suddenly start dying under mysterious and gruesome circumstances.
