Fans of DC Comics adaptations may recognize Sam Witwer as Davis Bloome from Smallville or Ben Lockwood / Agent Liberty from Supergirl, or know him from the time he provided the voice of Orm in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. Now Witwer has signed on to add his voice to a different DC project – and this time he’ll be delivering lines spoken by a cannibalistic serial killer called The Harvester. The project is a psychological thriller podcast called Batman Unburied, which is taking a very unique and dark approach to the concept of Batman.
Witwer joins a voice cast that includes Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, Lance Reddick and Toks Olagundoye as Thomas and Martha Wayne, John Rhys-Davies as Dr. Hunter, Ashly Burch as Vicki Vale, Bruce’s TV journalist ex-girlfriend, Hasan Minhaj as The Riddler, and Jason Isaacs as Bruce’s butler, nurse, and trusted confidant, Alfred Pennyworth.
Deadline reports that Witwer’s fellow new additions to the cast are Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) as Barbara Gordon, “the daughter of former police commissioner Jim Gordon and star detective for Gotham PD. Throughout the series, Barbara will grapple with her own ethics, as she tries to keep within the lines of police work yet is finding herself drawn to Batman’s self-styled method of justice”; Emmy Raver-Lampman (The Umbrella Academy) as Kell, “a sultry medical student helping Bruce while hiding a few secrets of her own”; Jessica Marie Garcia (On My Block) as Barbara Gordon’s partner Renee Montoya – “she’s smart enough to pick up Barbara’s bullshit, but begrudgingly puts up with her shady behavior”; and Jim Pirri (Penguins of Madasacar) as Arnold Flass, “a corrupt cop who uses his badge for his own person gain”.
Coming to us from Spotify and Dark Knight trilogy co-writer David S. Goyer, Batman Unburied tells a story in which Bruce Wayne is
a forensic pathologist, working in the bowels of Gotham Hospital and tasked with examining the victims of The Harvester, a gruesome serial killer preying on Gotham’s citizens. Not only will the Super-Hero be forced to face his own mental demons, but he will also have to overcome them in order to save the citizens of Gotham as his alter-ego, Batman.
This sounds interesting so far. I look forward to hearing how this audio reinvention of Batman and his supporting characters will turn out.
