Batman Unburied Season 2 will bring the Dark Knight back to Spotify for another grim adventure

Prepare yourselves for more Bat-tastic listening material because Spotify‘s Batman Uniburied podcast is getting a second season. Batman Unburied Season 2 was announced today at Spotify Beach during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Warner Bros and Spotify announced the show’s return at the “Dive Into The Batman Audio Universe” panel, moderated by Dawn Ostroff, Spotify’s Chief Content and Ads Business Officer.

Winston Duke (Batman, Bruce Wayne), Hasan Minhaj (Edward Nygma, The Riddler) were also a part of the panel, with Peter Girardi, Warner Bros.’ Executive Vice President Warner Bros. Animation and Blue Ribbon Content, also attending.

Batman Unburied premiered on May 3 with eight adaptations of the original English-language script for Brazil, Latin America, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, India, and Indonesia. After launch, the series quickly rose to the top of the Spotify Charts globally, claiming the number one spot in 11 markets for over two weeks. The Batman Unburied podcast was so popular that it dethroned The Joe Rogen Experience, Spotify’s controversial interview show.

During the panel, Duke spoke about bringing diversity to the comic world by saying, “It’s always been joked that Bruce Wayne’s superpower has been white privilege and I had to go through this period of really imagining and setting myself free to find a way in – this man who completely distrusts the justice system so much that he decides to take it into this own hands – this feels a lot more than the diasporic Black experience that I knew.”

Duke also remarked on David S. Goyer’s vision for Batman Unburied, saying, “Understanding there was a lot of intention placed in the conversation that they wanted to have with the audience, was incredible. To have Goyer tell me that one of his stipulations was that ‘I want to have a black Batman, I wanted to have a black Batman and won’t do it without it.’ And then the idea of Poison Ivy is a character that’s messing with our perception of the truth, and that to some degree that is the monster of today. We feel that we’re at war with perceptions of the truth – what’s real info vs. fake info, what is artifice vs. reality – that’s what’s being messed with here. And, the idea that our villains aren’t the monsters, they’re not vampires and ghouls and goblins, they’re systems that are impacting our sensibilities and how we perceive things and make decisions.”

Minhaj also commented on the cast of Batman Unburied, saying it was amazing to see the cast filled out by actors of different backgrounds. “Growing up, Batman looked a certain way, The Riddler looked a certain way, and this is exactly why I like comic books as a unique American genre. This is something that I always want to take a project on that I would have loved as a 15-year-old and 15-year-old Hasan would have loved this”

Lastly, Peter Girardi commented on the benefits of audio storytelling by saying, “We [Warner Bros.] do so many different kinds of projects with the DC IP, and every medium allows you to tell a different kind of story. But, one horizon that we’ve never been able to work in is audio-only and the scale of the stories you can tell, the different kind of stories, and it’s very exciting for us and brings a new fanbase and a new appreciation of the IP that we may have not reached.”

Batman Unburied Season 2 is officially in the works, and I could not be happier. The first season of the podcast series is one of the freshest Batman stories I’ve heard in years, and every aspect of the show slaps with quality of the highest order. The performances are spectacular, the production values are through the roof, and the story kept me in its grip and didn’t let go. I highly recommend it. It’s among my favorite podcasts, including The Old Gods of Appalachia, BBC’s UncannyGotham Outsiders, and more!

The first season of Batman Unburied stars Winston Duke (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Lance Reddick (Thomas Wayne), Ashly Burch (Vicki Vale), Gina Rodriguez (Barbara Gordon), Toks Olagundoye (Martha Wayne), Jason Isaacs (Alfred Pennyworth), Sam Witwer (The Harvester), John Rhys-Davies (Dr. Hunter), Jessica Marie Garcia (Renee Montoya), and more.

Are you as excited as I am to hear about Batman Unburied Season 2? You should be! If you have not listened to the show, all episodes for the first season are now on Spotify.
