Ben Affleck says Snyder and Whedon had different visions for Justice League

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

So JUSTICE LEAGUE is almost upon us. After many false starts and dashed hopes, it seems the movie is finally on its way. But it's not coming without some problems behind-the-scenes. This includes the family tragedy of Zack Snyder causing him to step down and have Joss Whedon stepping in, as well as a prolonged – and expensive – re-shooting schedule (which includes the story about them having to digitally remove Superman's boss-ass mustache). But how well have their styles melded? Here's what Ben Affleck (aka Batman) has to say about the whole ordeal:

It’s a little bit unorthodox…[and] an interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie.

That does seem to confirm some concerns that the two styles of the directors were so diametrically opposed. Zack Snyder mostly goes for more dark and portentous, while Joss Whedon goes for more light and jokey. That's not to say there's no humor in Snyder films, or that Whedon doesn't go dark (just watch SERENITY to know that's not true), just that – for the most part – their styles don't seem like they'd be readily compatible. Hopefully the tone isn't as schizophrenic as Affleck seems to be alluding there. In fact, he has nothing but nice things to say about the DCEU (then again, that is part of his job):

I’ve never worked on a movie that didn’t do reshoots,” Affleck says. “Argo, we did reshoots for a week and a half! Four days on Gone Baby Gone…This is a really nice time to work in DC. They’re hitting their stride. They’re getting it right. It’s starting to feel like it’s really working.

Look, I'm rooting for JUSTICE LEAGUE. I love these characters, and I want these films to succeed. And, hell, I loved MAN OF STEEL (flaws and all) and WONDER WOMAN, so it's not like I don't think they can pull it off. I'm just…worried. Hopefully that worry is unfounded.

Meanwhile, JUSTICE LEAGUE will charge into theaters November 17th.
