Blair Witch reboot may be brewing at Lionsgate

The indie found footage horror film The Blair Witch Project was a massive hit when it was released back in 1999, and to this day it has a lot of fans who consider it to be one of the best horror movies ever made. The attempt to rush a sequel into the world resulted in the black sheep known as Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2… and sixteen years after that film, Lionsgate tried to revive the Blair Witch property with the release of a reboot film appropriately titled Blair Witch. That movie kind of just came and went. But six years down the line, Jeff Sneider of The Ankler has heard that Lionsgate is interested in returning to the world of the Blair Witch.

Sneider said,

Start prepping those pitches, genre scribes, because it sounds like Lionsgate is ready to venture back into the woods again for another BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, since good IP is never truly dead in the Streaming Age…

Blair Witch has been dormant in the film and television department, but the property has been kept alive over the years through games like Blair Witch Fest and attractions like Escape Blair Witch.

Written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, The Blair Witch Project had the following synopsis:

Found video footage tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who’ve traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale’s veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.

Although an elaborate mythology was built up around the Blair Witch, at this point I’m feeling like it’s best to just leave this property alone. But who knows, maybe Lionsgate will find a pitch that will result in an awesome new Blair Witch project this time around.
