Brad Pitt blasts off in first trailer for James Gray’s Ad Astra

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

James Gray’s (THE LOST CITY OF Z) long-gestating space drama AD ASTRA has been quietly getting pushed down the release schedule for almost a year, once set for January of this year, then suddenly pushed to last month, all before being pumped to September. But now that release is locked in and the movie is just about ready for blast off, and to prove it’s the real deal the first trailer has been dropped by 20th Century Fox/Disney. Brad Pitt plays astronaut Roy McBride, who must travel to the ends of the solar system to figure out a mystery that threatens our planet and may even learn the mystery of his father’s disappearance in the process.

Gray first announced his intent to make the movie some years ago, comparing it to the outer space version of Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” and promising some of the most realistic space travel put to film. From the trailer, you certainly get a sense of space dramas like 2001 and INTERSTELLAR, and you can see why it may have taken so long to get just right for release. The visuals look astounding and he’s crafted what looks like LOST CITY but in space – a dangerous journey into the unknown with a compelling character arc at its core. What I’m saying is this movie looks like my kind of jam, and I’m pumped to see Pitt get lost in space. There even looks like a Moon chase akin to a FAST & FURIOUS movie, which is unexpected and probably awesome.
