Okay, Shudder's upcoming Creepshow series is clearly aiming to become my new favorite show. Executive produced by Greg Nicotero, protégé of George A. Romero and Tom Savini, and inspired by the Romero / Stephen King collaborations CREEPSHOW and CREEPSHOW 2, the series is already known to be starting off with an adaptation of the King story Survivor Type, which Nicotero is directing.
As reported earlier today, we have CREEPSHOW composer John Harrison, who also directed episodes of the Romero-produced series Tales from the Darkside and TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, coming in to direct episodes, and MONSTER HOUSE co-writer Rob Schrab directing an episode about something "unholy and supernatural" happening on a World War II battleground.
Now comes word that one episode is going to feature a killer scarecrow. Not only that, but that episode is based on a short story by BUBBA HO-TEP writer Joe R. Lansdale and his children Keith and Kasey. Titled The Companion, this story is about what happens when
13-year-old Harold decides to explore the long-abandoned farm of the late Raymond Brenner, and finds that he's got a new companion: a murderous, indestructible scarecrow.
The adaptation is being written by Matt Venne, who has written the Stephen King mini-series Bag of Bones as well as several sequels – WHITE NOISE 2, MIRRORS 2, FRIGHT NIGHT 2, THE EXORCISM OF MOLLY HARTLEY.
I haven't read the source material, but a killer scarecrow story by the guy who brought us BUBBA HO-TEP sounds awesome to me.
It has also been revealed that an episode of Creepshow will be based on a story by King's son Joe Hill (who had an acting role in the first CREEPSHOW), but we don't know which story it is.
The first season of Creepshow is only going to consist of six episodes, and it's sounding like each one is going to be a winner.
