A film we've been referring to as JURASSIC WORLD 3 is currently in the works for a June 11, 2021 release. It will will probably be called JURASSIC WORLD with some kind of subtitle in place of the number by the time it reaches theatres, but behind the scenes director/co-writer Colin Trevorrow has been referring to it as JURASSIC PARK VI.
Of course, that's because it is the sixth film in the JURASSIC PARK franchise. By why call this one JURASSIC PARK when the previous two branched off with the JURASSIC WORLD name? Because JURASSIC PARK stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum are all coming back this time around, the first time they've all been in a JURASSIC movie since the first one.
Speaking with Empire, Trevorrow said it took this long to figure out how to get all three of the characters into a JURASSIC WORLD movie because
We’d have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again. The next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. (Co-writer) Emily Carmichael and I call it ‘Jurassic Park VI’, because it is."
Trevorrow says the process of bringing the characters back starts with
asking the most basic questions: who are these people now? What do they make of the new world they’re living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history? Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We’ll do it together."
As the end of JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM showed us, "the new world they're living in" is one in which dinosaurs have been set loose in mainland America. Before heading into production on JURASSIC WORLD 3 / JURASSIC PARK VI, Trevorrow dug into the idea of dinosaurs running around in the California countryside with a short film called BATTLE AT BIG ROCK (embedded above.)
A collaboration between Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, JURASSIC WORLD 3 is being executive produced by Trevorrow and Steven Spielberg, with Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley producing. Sara Scott, senior vice president of production at Universal, is overseeing the project for the studio.
Neill, Dern, and Goldblum's co-stars in the new sequel will include Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Mamoudou Athie, and DeWanda Wise.
