Curry Barker is back with a brand new horror short. The filmmaker behind Obsession has teamed up with Windows for Mama Bear, a new short film that has debuted exclusively on YouTube just in time for Halloween. You can watch it in the embed above.
Mama Bear marks Barker’s first project to be released after the success of Obsession, which helped turn the filmmaker into one of horror’s most in-demand rising talents. For longtime fans, the release also brings him back to the short form horror filmmaking that helped build his audience online.
Barker wrote, directed, and edited Mama Bear. The cast features Jon Lee Richardson as Floyd, Katie Sarife as Lacey, Ericka Kreuz as Ms. Wilson, and Joshua Snyder as Floyd’s Doppelgänger.
Although Barker has moved into feature filmmaking, short films remain an important part of his creative history. Before Obsession, he developed a following through online horror projects, including The Chair and Milk & Serial, releasing videos through his comedy channel, That’s a Bad Idea. Those projects helped establish Barker as a filmmaker to watch, demonstrating how online horror could build an audience beyond the traditional film industry.
What’s Next for the Obsession Director?
Barker has several major projects on the horizon. His next feature, Anything But Ghosts, is scheduled to arrive in theatres nationwide on May 7, 2027, from Focus Features, with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster producing. The horror comedy is written and directed by Barker, who co-wrote the screenplay with his longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson. The two also star as wannabe ghost hunters who find themselves in a situation that spirals dangerously out of control. The cast includes Violet McGraw, Chris Reinacher, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul.
Barker has also been tapped to write and direct a new reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24. In addition, he has secured an eight-figure deal with Universal, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster to write, produce, and direct another original film, although details of that project remain under wraps.
For now, Mama Bear offers horror fans a chance to catch Barker’s latest work while they wait for his next feature. The new short is available to watch on YouTube, just in time for Halloween.
