Daniel Craig on the one line which made him take on the role of James Bond

Daniel Craig, James Bond, Casino Royale

In just a few months, Daniel Craig will be holstering his Walther PPK for his fifth and final film as James Bond, bringing an end to his fourteen-year run as the secret agent. You can scarcely recall the period in which fans were rallying against the news that the actor would be James Bond in CASINO ROYALE, and Daniel Craig recently spoke with Empire about the one line in the script for CASINO ROYALE which made him accept the role in the first place.

One of the biggest reasons I did Casino Royale is the line, ‘A vodka martini, please.’ ‘Shaken or stirred?’ My reply was written in the script as, ‘Do I look like I give a fuck?’ And that’s it. That’s the reason I did it. Because what I could not do, and what I refused to do, was repeat what had gone before. What was the fucking point? So I’d rather have just one and gone, ‘Okay, swing and a miss. There you go. Tried my best.’

Thankfully, CASINO ROYALE was not a swing and a miss for Daniel Craig, and he went on to reprise the role in QUANTUM OF SOLACE, SKYFALL, SPECTRE, and the upcoming NO TIME TO DIE. Following the release of SPECTRE, there was the possibility that Craig was done with the role, but he told Empire that a "secret idea" kept him onboard for one final movie. "If [Spectre] had been [my last Bond film], the world would have carried on as normal, and I would have been absolutely fine," Craig said. "But somehow it felt like we needed to finish something off. If I’d left it at Spectre, something at the back of my head would have been going, 'I wish I’d done one more.' I always had a kind of secret idea about the whole lot in my head, and where I wanted to take it. And Spectre wasn’t that, but this feels like it is."

NO TIME TO DIE will find Bond having left active service, but that all changes when Felix Leiter comes calling to enlist his help to search for a missing scientist. When it becomes apparent that the scientist was abducted, Bond must confront a danger the likes of which the world has never seen before in a villain armed with dangerous new technology. The film will hit theaters in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2020 and on April 8, 2020 in the United States.
