Darren Aronofsky did not want NOAH to be in 3D, so he didn’t film it that way. Paramount Pictures will honor that wish for the release of the biblical epic in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and France, but in most other major markets, NOAH will be post-converted to 3D. Many of you have hated post-converted 3D films release to date, but they are big money makers in Asia and South America, so Paramount wants to do what they can to make back their money on the film.
Aronofsky and Paramount have been at odds regarding NOAH, his first studio picture, to the point that they only recently agreed on a theatrical cut of the film. Paramount is confident that the combination of the film and Aronofsky’s fanbase will make NOAH a hit in the 2D markets mentioned above, but they are still spending another $10 million to post-convert it for the rest of the world.
There does not seem to be a response from the director as to how he feels about this change, but it is purely a business and not an artistic decision. Having spent over $100 million on the movie and having had the issues behind the scenes we are aware of, there is no guarantee they will make a profit back on the movie without taking the 3D step. As a fan of Darren Aronofsky, I think this is a shit move, but I understand why they are doing it.
