Disney to screen new Simpsons short in theaters ahead of Pixar’s Onward

Now that Disney has a white-gloved stranglehold on The Simpsons franchise after acquiring aspects of 20th Century Fox in March of 2019, the House of Mouse has free-rein to bring America's most beloved dysfunctional family to screens in whichever way they choose. As such, it's been announced that an all-new original Simpsons short is set play ahead of screenings of Pixar's ONWARD.

Disney made the announcement on Friday with a post via the official Simpsons Instagram account:

The new short is titled "Playdate with Destiny," and based on the image shared above, the new Simpsons presentation will focus on Maggie Simpson, the youngest, silent, and pacifier-lovin' member of the Simpsons clan.

In the above image, Maggie looks as if she's dressed for a posh, jet-setting holiday to some of the most beautiful parts of the world. Joining the spikey-haired toddler for a rooftop view of the sunset is a character that's new to me, and is a snazzy dresser to boot. Could love be in the air for young Maggie? Is this all part of some elaborate dream? We'll have to wait until the short debuts in theaters to find out.

Obviously, the new Simpsons short changes a bit of Pixar's game, who traditionally screens animated shorts that hail from their own studio before the big show. It's possible that this is yet another way for Disney to remind fans that the entire Simpsons library is available to stream exclusively on their Disney+ platform. In fact, I bet that's exactly what this is, and I say bring it on. A little variety never hurts, especially when it comes to the art of animation.

Be sure to arrive early to theaters so you can catch "Playdate with Destiny" on the big screen when Pixar's ONWARD arrives in theaters on March 6th.
