Disney’s onslaught of live-action adaptations continues with Snow White

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Disney Live-action

Disney could save us all a great deal of time by simply announcing which of their classic animated features won't be getting the live-action adaptation treatment, because at this point, that list is shrinking away to almost nothing. THR reports that the next film on Disney's chopping block will be a musical live-action version of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.

Erin Cressida Wilson, who penned the adaptation of THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, is currently in negotiations to write the script for the upcoming film which is said to "expand upon the story and music from the beloved animated classic." In addition to the classics, the film will also feature new music from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (LA LA LAND). As the original SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS was Disney's first animated feature-film (all the way back in 1937), I'm a little surprised that the announcement of its live-action sibling had to follow countless others. Perhaps Disney wanted to put a little space between their live-action version and several of the other Snow White movies we've had recently, including MIRROR MIRROR and SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN.

Although it'd be easy to give Disney a hard time about this recent trend, they really have been quite successful with their live-action adaptations as CINDERELLA, MALEFICENT and particularly THE JUNGLE BOOK, have emerged as surprisingly entertaining movies. Several of Disney's upcoming live-action flicks include BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, which stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens and will hit theaters on March 17, 2017, THE LION KING, to be directed by Jon Favreau, and ALADDIN, which recently put Guy Ritchie in the director's chair.
